SLIAC Player of the Week - September 23rd
The Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced the winners of the Player of the Week for September 23rd. This week's student-athlete winners are Vickey Benhart, Corinne Coon, Jesse Edwards, Sarah Koestner, Ally Nikolaus, Jacob Stieb, Summer Switzer and Brian Woodward.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Jesse Edwards (Westminster College)
Edwards, a sophomore from Rogersville, Mo., put together his
personal best performance this weekened as he competed in the
Missouri Southern Invitational. Edwards finished the 8K course in a
time of 26:42, shaving off a minute of his previous personal best
time. Edwards finished just over a minute off the winner's time and
helped his team to an 8th place finish in the 16 team field.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Sarah Koestner (Westminster College)
Koestner, a senior from Russellville, Mo., set a personal record
this weekend; taking 27 seconds off her previous best. Koestner
completed the 5K race in the Missouri Southern Invitational in a
time of 18:58, finishing 20th individually and 52 seconds behind
the leader.
MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Jacob Stieb (Webster University)
Stieb, a junior defender, provided the Gorloks with unexpected but
needed offensive punch when he netted the game winning goal against
Coe. In a scoreless game against Coe Stieb became the hero with a
game-winning goal with just four minutes left in the second
overtime period to help his team to their second consecutive 1-0
win. This marks the second time this season Stieb has earned Player
of the Week honors; also earning Defensive Player for the week of
Sept. 3rd.
MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Brian Woodward (Webster University)
Woodward, a junior goalkeeper, put in extra work this week
allowing just three goals in 286 minutes of action over three
games. He started the week with four saves against both Missouri
Baptist and Augustana. Woodward then recorded five saves in a
double overtime contest against Coe, extending his scoreless streak
to 218 minutes. For the week Woodward finished with eight saves on
11 shots on goal while recording two shutouts.
WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Ally Nikolaus (Webster University)
Nikolaus, a senior midfielder, helped her team to a pair of wins
on the week by playing a role in five of her team's goals. She
notched two goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over Buena Vista and
added two assists in a 7-2 win over Coe. On the week her two goals
and three assists helped move her into 11th place on the school's
all-time lists for both career goals and total points.
WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Vickey Benhart (Eureka College)
Benhart, a sophomore goalkeeper from Crystal Lake, Ill., guided
the Red Devils to a pair of wins last week. She recorded four saves
in a 2-1 win over Rockford and followed with a one save shutout
performance against Robert Morris-Peoria before the game was called
at the 70 minute mark. On the week she finished with five saves in
160 minutes of action with an .833 save percentage.
VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Corinne Coon (Greenville College)
Coon, a senior opposite hitter from Warsaw, Ind., helped extend
her team's winning streak to 10 matches with a perfect 3-0 record
last week. Coon averaged 4.6 kills per set, hitting .290 with 46
kills in 10 sets. She added 29 digs and five total blocks on the
week. Coon recorded double digits in kills in all three matches
including an 18 kill match against conference foe Westminster. This
marks the second time this season Coon has been named Volleyball
Offensive Player of the Week, also earning honors for the week of
Sept. 9th.
VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Summer Switzer (Principia College)
Switzer, a junior libero from St. Louis, Mo., led her team's
defense this week averaging 5.15 digs per set in three matches. She
finished with 67 digs total, including a career high 37 digs
against Rose-Hulman. Switzer followed with a 25 dig outing against
Anderson. She also added four serice aces on the week.
SPECIAL MENTIONS
- Dakota Flesner, Iowa Wesleyan College (Volleyball) Flesner finished with 46 kills in four matches including a 14 kill and 12 dig match against Monmouth and a 16 kill, 8 dig match against Eureka.
- Kayla Reeg, Westminster College (Volleyball) Reeg finished with 80 assists in three matches on the week including a 26 assist match against MacMurray and a 44 assist, 27 dig performance against Greenville.
- Jamie Schollenbruch, Greenville College (Volleyball) Schollenbruch recorded double digits in digs in all three matches including a 25 dig outing against Westminster.
- Caroline Will, Westminster Colelge (Volleyball) Will added a 23 dig performance against Greenville, including eight assists from her libero spot.
