Westminster's James Reaches Milestone

Westminster’s senior Joe James (St. Louis, Mo. /Vianney) hit his 1,000th career point in the 59-68 loss to Webster University Thursday evening. The loss snaps the Blue Jay’s 3-0 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record. The Blue Jays are now 3-1 in the SLIAC and 6-5 overall.

The Webster Gorloks took an early 11-3 lead before James hit a three-pointer, scoring his 1,000th career point. The Gorloks then scored 9 unanswered points, giving them the 20-6 lead.

Two three-pointers by junior Brandon Moore (Jefferson City, Mo. /Blair Oaks) and a jumper by James and sophomore Kellen Brondel (Wardsville, Mo. /Blair Oaks) brought the game within 6, 16-22, with 7:42 to go in the first half.

The Blue Jays were unable to cut the deficit to less than six points and they headed into halftime down 26-34.

A short 7-0 run to start the second half brought the Blue Jays to within 3 points, 33-36. The Blue Jays kept pace with the Gorloks, but could not grasp the lead.

With 13:12 left on the clock, the Gorloks managed a 10-3 run. Two three-pointers by junior Verdis Lee Jr. (Fulton, Mo. /Fulton) and a three-pointer by senior Jordan Jones (Ballwin, Mo. /Marquette) brought the game within four points, 56-60, with 3:19 left in the game.

The Gorloks went 4-for-5 from the foul line, ending the game at 59-68 and handing the Blue Jays their first SLIAC loss of the season.

Moore led the Blue Jays with 20 points after going 6-for-10 from the three-point line. Lee Jr. added 19 points, shooting 50% from the three-point line (4-for-8) and going 5-6 from the foul line. Lee Jr. led the Blue Jays with 4 rebounds.

The Blue Jays head to Greenville, Illinois on Saturday, January 11 to take on Greenville College. Tip off will be at 3:00 p.m.
