Webster Captures 2015 SLIAC All-Sports Trophy Title
Webster University captured the 2014-15 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) All-Sports Trophy for the 11th consecutive year, finishing with 99.5 total points. This is the 15th time in school history Webster University has won the conference's all-sports trophy, which was established in 1999.
Six of the conference's ten members won a SLIAC regular season title this year. This year's SLIAC champions were Webster (Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Men's Basketball, Women's Tennis, Baseball), Greenville (Women's Cross Country, Volleyball), Spalding (Men's Cross Country, Women's Basketball, Men's Basketball, Men's Golf), Fontbonne (Softball), Principia (Men's Tennis), MacMurray (Men's Basketball).
Webster finished the 2014-15 year with 99.5 total points, an increase of two points from last year's winning total. The Gorloks won league titles in men's and women's soccer as well as women's tennis and baseball. The Gorloks also split first place points in men's basketball where they finished in a three way tie. Webster also had a second place finish in men's cross country, volleyball, and men's golf.
For the second consecutive year Greenville College finished second, finishing this year with 86 total points. The Panthers picked up first place points in women's cross country and volleyball while finishing second in men's tennis, softball, and tying for second in baseball. Spalding University placed third this year with 83 points after first place finishes in men's cross country, women's basketball, men's golf, and tying for first in men's basketball.
The biggest risers from last year's point totals was MacMurray College, who moved up 13.5 points to seventh place in this year's standings. The Highlanders improvement was bolstered by a first place tie for the men's basketball team and improvement among their spring sports; softball and baseball which added seven additional points from last year's scores.
The SLIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy is determined by awarding points based on each schools finish in the Conference’s 12 sports, earning ten points for a first-place finish, nine points for a second-place finish, etc. Teams finishing tied split the points for the tied spot and the spot(s) immediately following (two teams finishing tied for third receives 7.5 points). In 2010 the SLIAC All-Sports Trophy guidelines were changed to be determined by total points, rather than a points average. The change was made to further encourage the NCAA Division III philosophy of broad-based athletics programs.
