SLIAC Players of the Week - Sept. 2

The first SLIAC Players of the Week for the 2014 fall seasons are out and include student-athletes from five different schools. This week's winners are Trevor Bruner, Jess Edwards, Sarah Litwiller, Tess Rountree, Mason Rowe, Amy Schield, and Jordan Vehlewald.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSE
Mason Rowe, MacMurray College

Rowe, a senior from Marseilles, Ill., notched a hat-trick in his team's win over Northland this past weekend. Rowe started the game's scoring with a goal at the 20-minute mark. He added two more goals early in the second-half in sparking his team to their first win of the 2014 season.

 

 

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSE
Trevor Bruner, Spalding University

Bruner, a junior from Jeffersonville, Ind., helped Spalding to a 1-0 shutout win over Muskingum University in their 2014 season opener. Bruner played all 90 minutes and led a defense that limited their opponent to just one shot on goal.

 

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSE
Amy Schield, Webster University

Schield, a senior from Belleville, Ill., assumed the responsibilities of marking the opponents top forward this past week. Schield limited her opponent, an All-Region forward last year, to just two shots in Webster's loss to #24 ranked Calvin. The next day Schield once again shut down the opponents top striker, limiting her to just one shot on goal in a double overtime tie against Edgewood.

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSE
Tess Rountree, Principia College

The defending SLIAC Volleyball Player of the Year, Tess Rountree is this week's Player of the Week. Rountree, a senior from Paso Robles, Calif., recorded three double digit kills matches, averaging 4.69 kills per set on the week. She had a week best 21 kills in a win over Knox and closed out the week with 19 kills against Aurora. Rountree added four service aces on the week and average 5.5 points per set.

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSE
Jordan Vehlewald, Webster University

Vehlewald, a senior from Wildwood, Mo., is the SLIAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Gorloks to their first 2-0 start to the season since 2011. Vehlewald recorded 17 digs in a pair of matches last weekend. She averaged 5.67 digs in a three set sweep of Hanover and averaged 3.4 digs in a five set win over Buena Vista. Vehlewald also finished with 41 serve receives on the week.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Jesse Edwards, Westminster College

Edwards, a junior from Rogersville, Ark., took first place in his opening meet of the 2014 season. Edwards finished in a time of 17:12 at the CMU Eagle Invitational, averaging a pace of 5:32 over the course.

 

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Sarah Litwiller, Principia College

Litwiller, a senior from Concord, Calif., is the SLIAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week after picking up where she left off last year. Litwiller, the defending SLIAC Champion, took first place in her program's season opening meet this past weekend. She finished the 4K race with a meet best time of 15:22, cutting nearly 90-seconds off her time from last year, and averaging a 6:10 mile pace.

Other Notable Performers:
Morgan Hauser, MacMurray College (Volleyball)- Recorded double digit kills in all three of her matches on the week including a high of 16 against Lincoln Christian.

Richie Hershkowitz, Greenville College (Men's Soccer)- Helped team record back to back shutout wins while adding two goals in the win over Anderson.

Shann McCaul, Westminster College (Women's Cross Country)- Placed first in the CMU Eagle Invitational, her first collegiate race, with a time of 21:32.

Kersten McDonough, Fontbonne University (Volleyball)- Recorded 19 kills in a three set loss to Hanover College.

Elliot Thompson, Greenville College (Men's Soccer)- Netted two goals and one assist in a 4-0 win over Anderson.
