AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn women's basketball team will have a busy week of action. The Beavers will play four games over the next eight days. Blackburn is on the road this weekend when they face Westminster in a SLIAC meeting. They will then head out to North Park before playing in the Pat Deacon Classic next weekend.

Eureka forward Kelsey Shoemake was a force in her team's win over Fontbonne last weekend. Shoemake finished the game with 22 points and 20 rebounds. She was 7-of-17 from the field including 8-of-9 from the free-throw line while grabbing eight of her 20 rebounds on the offensive side of the ball. She is currently averaging 20.0 points and 14.0 rebounds per game this season.

The Fontbonne men's basketball team took on the #1 ranked team in Division III, Augustana. The Griffins were unable to pull off the upset, falling 116-62 as Augustana jumped out to a 17-0 lead to start the game. Jared Greenlee led Fontbonne with 10 points. The Griffins get back to conference action this weekend when they host Iowa Wesleyan.

The Greenville men's basketball team is just one of three undefeated teams in conference play and will be looking for their first 3-0 start in SLIAC play since the 2008-09 season. The Panthers have won three straight and five of their last six games. They will face NCAA Division II foe McKendree on Wednesday night before returning to SLIAC play against Principia on Saturday and putting their undefeated conference record on the line.

Tiger Whitney Godden was named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week last week after helping her team to a pair of wins in their conference opening games. Godden averaged 25.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 4.0 steals in two games on the week. She netted 28 points in a win over Blackburn, knocking down eight three-pointers and tying the program record for three's in a game.

MacMurray senior men's basketball player Clayton Whitlock was recently named 2014 Lincoln Laurete. Awarded by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois, the Lincoln Laureate Award is presented for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities to a senior from each four-year, degree-granting institution of higher education in Illinois.

Although they are 0-2 in conference play, the Principia women's basketball team dropped the two games by just five combined points. The Panthers fell 58-56 to Fontbonne and 58-55 to Webster. Principia will play just one more game before break, as they go on the road to face Stephens College in a non-conference game on Thursday.

The Spalding women's basketball team tested themselves last weekend when they faced #14 ranked DePauw. After staying close early Spalding faded as the game went on, falling 67-43. The Golden Eagles were led by Kayla Styles with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Spalding does not return to action until Dec. 20 when they host Eureka College.

The Webster University basketball teams will play host to ranked opponents on Wednesday night when they face the nationally ranked men's and women's teams from Washington University. The Bears women's team is ranked #5 while the men's team is ranked #4. Women's tip starts at 6 p.m. with the men set to start at 8 p.m.
Westminster's Brandon Moore is shooting the ball with a hot hand right now, leading the conference in three-point shooting. Moore is knocking down 60-percent of his shots from behind the arc. Moore has hit on 18-of-30 three-point shots and is averaging 14.0 points per game this season.
