MacMurray Takes Winter Canned Food Drive Title
For the second straight sport season MacMurray College has claimed the SLIAC/SAAC Canned Food Drive title. MacMurray edged out Iowa Wesleyan College during the winter season collecting 634 cans of food during collections before and after men's and women's basketball games.
This winter the members of the SLIAC collected 3,437 canned food items, nearly 1,500 more than last winters totals and an increase of nearly 1,000 from this fall. Iowa Wesleyan finished second in the winter collection with a total of 633 while Blackburn collected 575 items. Five members increased their canned food totals from the fall with a total of eight members collecting over 220 items.
This marks the second year the SLIAC and members of the conference's Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) agreed to a conference wide community service competition. The goal is to give back to the community and further develop citizenship among its student-athletes. Each institution and their SAAC committee will hold canned food drives throughout the year, with the collected donations going to a local food pantry. Collection periods end during the last weekend of the regular season for the respective sports. Cash donations are also accepted with every dollar donated counting as two canned food items. The competition is divided into three collection periods; the fall season, the winter season, and the spring season.
