SLIAC Players of the Week - September 28

This week's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week are: Erin Downs, Richie Hershkowitz, Jonny Madrid, Hannah Marshall, Valerie Martin, Christin Miller, Shane Witters-Hicks, and Ellen Woolsey.

 

SLIAC MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
SHANE WITTERS-HICKS - PRINCIPIA COLLEGE

Witters-Hicks, a junior from Golden, Colo., claimed his second SLIAC Men's Cross Country Player of the Week award this season after competing in the Brissman-Lundeen Invite hosted by Augustana College. Witters-Hicks finished the 8K race in a time of 25:42, finishing 36th out of a field of 603 runners. His time was just 23-seconds off the first-place finisher, while averaging a 5:11 mile pace during the race. For Witters-Hicks the time also set a new personal best. 

 

SLIAC WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
VALERIE MARTIN - WEBSTER UNIVERSITY

Martin, a junior from Webster Groves, Mo., is the SLIAC Women's Cross Country Player of the Week after claiming the best finish of any conference runner at the Brissman-Lundeen Invite last weekend. Martin finished the 6K course in 23:39, placing 46th overall. She maintained a mile pace of 6:21 during the race and finished with the best time in program history by a Gorlok at the long running event.

SLIAC MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK (OFFENSIVE)
JONNY MADRID - GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Madrid, a freshman from Grayslake, Ill., netted a hat trick in his team's only game last week, a 7-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan. Madrid scored just three-minutes into the game and added a second goal just over 10-minutes later. He completed the hat trick with a goal on a penalty kick mid-way through the second-half. Madrid maintained his season long efficiency, scoring his three goals on just three shots. On the year he has placed all 16 of his shots on net, holding a 44-percent shot percentage; tops in the conference.

RICHIE HERSHKOWITZ  - GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Hershkowitz, a senior from Galesburg, Ill., helped his team to a shutout win over Iowa Wesleyan; extending the Panthers winning streak to three games. Hershkowitz played all 90 minutes in the game as the Greenville defense limited Iowa Wesleyan to just one shot on goal and two shots overall. The Panther defense has now put together three consecutive shutouts. 


SLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK (OFFENSIVE)
CHRISTIN MILLER - BLACKBURN COLLEGE

Miller, a freshman from Georgetown, Ind., took control of the game against MacMurray; scoring all four of her team's goals in a 4-2 win. Miller broke a scoreless game open with a goal at the 22-minute mark. After MacMurray tied the game up she gave her team the lead once again with another goal at the 30-minute mark. She recorded the hat trick just eight-minutes later, giving Blackburn a 3-1 lead at half-time. After MacMurray struck again Miller gave the Beavers some breathing room with her fourth goal, coming at the 69-minute mark. 

SLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK (DEFENSIVE)
ELLEN WOOLSEY - WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Woolsey, a junior from Marshall, Mo., is the SLIAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after recording a shutout over Fontbonne University last week. Woolsey was in net for the Blue Jays 2-0 win over Fontbonne, making eight saves in the contest. The shutout win is Woolsey's third of the season and she currently leads the conference with a 1.22 goals-against average.


SLIAC VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK (OFFENSIVE)
HANNAH MARSHALL - WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Marshall, a sophomore from Wildwood, Mo., was dominant in her team's only match on the week, a 3-0 win over Eureka College. Marshall finished the match with 12 kills, six digs, and three total blocks. Marshall put down her 12 kills on just 22 attempts, with just one error for a .500 hitting percentage. She added three service aces in the match and accounted for 17.5 total points in the match.


SLIAC VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK (DEFENSIVE)
ERIN DOWNS - SPALDING UNIVERSITY

Downs, a senior from Decatur, Ill., was a force at the net for Spalding as they picked up three conference wins on the week. Downs finished the week with 14 total blocks, including 10 during her three conference matches. She started with two solo blocks and two block assists against Franklin. After two solo blocks against MacMurray and two total blocks against MacMurray she put together her best outing with three solo blocks and three block assists against Fontbonne. Downs currently leads the conference in both total blocks and blocks per set.

Other Notables:

  • Sophia Hathaway, Principia College (Volleyball) Hathaway totaled 23 kills with just two errors, along with 21 digs, in a five set loss to Fontbonne University.
  • Victoria Heitzman, Spalding University (Volleyball) Heitzman averaged 4.0 kills and hit .447 over three conference matches including 24 digs.  
  • Cierra Howard, Iowa Wesleyan College (Volleyball) Howard recorded 44 digs in five sets against Illinois College, averaging 8.8 digs per set.
  • Ashley Mess, Webster University (Women's Soccer) Mess anchored a Gorlok defense that allowed just one goal in 180-minutes on the week while adding two assists.
  • Kersten McDonough, Fontbonne University (Volleyball) McDonough recorded three double-doubles on the week including two 20 kill performances.
  • Rachel Nelson, Webster University (Volleyball) Nelson totaled 18 kills and six blocks in a five set loss to Illinois College.
  • Jamie Schollenbruch, Greenville College (Volleyball) Schollenbruch averaged 6.18 digs per set in three wins last week including 26 digs against Webster.
  • Savannah Sells, Greenville College (Volleyball) Sells was nearly unstoppable against Blackburn, putting down 10 kills on just 13 attempts with no errors. She added 18 kills and 20 digs in a five set win over Webster.
