SLIAC Weekly Release - April 6

Branneky Breaks Two Career Records, Ties A Third (April 3, 2016)
Westminster's senior Tyler Branneky broke two career records and tied a third in Saturday's conference sweep over Greenville College. He broke the career runs record and the RBI record in game one and tied the career home run record in the first game.....MORE

SLIAC Game of the Week: Westminster at Webster (April 5, 2016)
This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is a meeting between the two top teams in the SLIAC West Division according to the 2016 preseason coaches poll; Webster University and Westminster College. The last time these two teams met was in the 2015 SLIAC Tournament with Westminster eliminating Webster to advance to the championship game.....MORE

AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn men's golf team picked up a seventh place finish in the Tiger Classic in Fort Madison, Iowa this past week. The Beavers finished with a team score of 341 for the one day event. Kyle Kesingel and Tyler Solie led Blackburn with an 83, tying for 25th place individually. Jordan McMillen shot an 87 while Anthony Harper finished with a 88 and Jordan Mueller recorded a 95.

Eureka's Kerrigan Dura had a dominating performance last week, earning SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week honors. Dura hit .750 in eight games last week, helping her team go undefeated. She delivered one home run and drove in a remarkable 25 runs. On the week she was 21-of-28 at the plate and finished with a 1.357 slugging percentage. Dura has already set the Red Devils single season record for RBI.

The Griffins track and field team had a strong showing at the Wash U Invitational this past weekend. Tyler Williams set a school record in the 100 meter dash, earning SLIAC Player of the Week honors. Quinn Wilson also set a new record in the high jump. Kelly Mundwiller nearly set two program records, coming up just short in the discus and javelin.

The Greenville men's tennis team has now won four straight matches including a thrilling 5-4 win over Principia last week. Greenville used wins from Code Power and Blake Gocey to notch the victory. Greenville took doubles play 2-1 while Power notched a 6-3, 6-4 win at #3 singles and Gocey winning 6-3, 6-2 at #4 singles. Justin Tilford recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles to secure the win for Greenville.

The Tigers golf team placed fourth this past week as they hosted the Tiger Classic in Fort Madison, Iowa at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course. Iowa Wesleyan finished with a team score of 323, 10 strokes off the leader. Patrick Zielinski and Michael Neff tied for the team lead, and fourth overall, with a score of 78. Bo Vitale shot 83 to tie for 25th place while Kiley Miller shot an 84 and Tanner Travis finished with an 86.

The MacMurray baseball team is riding a two game winning streak into this week's action. The Highlanders took the final two games of a three game series against Blackburn last weekend and will face Knox on the road in a non-conference game on Thursday. They will then return to SLIAC play by hosting Spalding in a three game series this weekend with a double header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. MacMurray is currently 11-13 overall and 6-4 in the SLIAC.

The Principia baseball team notched their first conference win of the season on Tuesday night, splitting a double header with Westminster. The Panthers took game two on the night 15-13, holding off a late push by the Blue Jays. Principia pounded out 12 hits in the game with Hunter Mehring, Jake Kearney, Bryce Murray, and Jeff Ross all picking up two hits a piece. Mehring also added two home runs and five RBI.

The Spalding softball team will step outside of SLIAC play for a double header against Transylvania on Thursday. The Golden Eagles are 7-9 overall and coming off a double header sweep of Blackburn last weekend. Spalding has been led by sophomore Samantha Klein, hitting .383 with two home runs and 18 runs batted in, and senior Becca Mouser, .319 average with three home runs and 16 RBI.

The Webster baseball team returns home for the first time in over a month when they host Westminster this weekend in a three game series. Webster split with Greenville in a double header on Tuesday night, falling 4-2 in game one but responding with a 5-3 win in game two. The Gorloks are 13-11 overall and 7-3 in the SLIAC. Their weekend series is set for a double header on Saturday and one game on Sunday.

The Westminster baseball team is on a roll offensively, scoring 10 or more runs in each of their last four games and five of their last six. Earlier this season the Blue Jays plated 29 runs in a win over Middlebury. They are averaging 9.6 runs per game, tops in the SLIAC. Their hot bats will face the league's top pitching staff, Webster with a 3.23 E.R.A., this weekend in a three game series.
