AROUND THE SLIAC
The Blackburn women's soccer team recorded the first three wins of the 2015 season last week defeating Rockford, Mount Mary, and Wisconsin-Lutheran. The Beavers were led on offense by Meghan Sykora, who tallied four goals and three assists, and on defense by Jourdin McFarland, who made 19 saves with two shutouts in three games. Both players picked up SLIAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors. |
The Eureka volleyball team picked up their first win of the season last night, a 3-1 victory over Robert Morris-Springfield. The Red Devils pounded out 43 kills in the four set win. Gabrielle Moody and Heather Robinson led the way with 10 kills each, while Robinson added 12 assists and eight digs. Meagan Hanney finished with 22 assists while Cassandra Beesley led the team with 27 digs. |
Fontbonne outside hitter Kersten McDonough leads SLIAC volleyball with 3.67 kills per set. McDonough has pounded out 158 kills in her 12 matches this season and is hitting .160 on the year. Fontbonne is currently 3-9 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They are in action again this week with a match against Lincoln Christian and a pair of conference matches against Blackburn and MacMurray. |
Greenville sophomore Brooke Goodyear was named the SLIAC Women's Cross Country Player of the Week after her showing in the Midwest Classic XC Invite in Bourbonais, Ill. last weekend. Goodyear finished the 5k race with a time of 20:02, a four minute mile pace. Goodyear over came a soggy course to grab a ninth place finish in a field of 98 runners. |

Highlander women's soccer forward Lyndi Saccaro is off to a hot start this season, leading the SLIAC in points with 15 thanks to her league leading seven goals. Saccaro has a goal in four of five games played including three multi-goal games. As a team MacMurray is 2-3 overall and will face Lincoln Christian on Saturday. |
Shane Witters-Hicks was named the SLIAC Men's Cross Country Player of the Week after a sixth place finish in the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. Witters-Hicks had a top ten finish in a field of 140 runners, completing the 8k course in a time of 26:23. That marked a drop of nearly a minute off his 2014 best time. |

The Webster University volleyball team took both games in the season opening weekend, sweeping Eureka and Iowa Wesleyan. Webster is now 3-4 overall and are just one of three undefeated teams in the SLIAC. The Gorloks are back in action this week with three out of conference matches as they are on the road against St. Louis College of Pharmacy, St. Mary's (Ind.) and Millikin. |
The Westminster men's soccer team extended their winning streak to three games with a 1-0 win over Ozarks (Ark.) last week. Eli Sherman scored the game's only goal, coming in the 18th-minute, off a pass from Drake Trease. Raul Belman made six saves in the contest to record his 12th career shutout and picked up SLIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors. |
Although the Tiger volleyball team is still in search of their first win of the season they still rank among conference leaders in a pair of categories.
