Blue Angels Triumph Over Red Devils

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University soccer team won their first match of the season tonight at Blue Angels Soccer Field. The Blue Angels (1-2) outscored the Eureka Red Devils early on their way to a 4-2 victory.

Early on in the contest, the two teams traded possessions and field position evenly. Near the 14-minute mark, Nyasia Hardy riffled through the defense and broke away. Hardy drilled a shot from 10 yards out to give the Blue Angels their first goal of the 2019 season and their first lead.

Seven minutes later the Blue Angels added another goal to their tallies. After Lexi Shadlow took a shot Tamara Griffin corralled the rebound. Griffin promptly unloaded a shot into the net to propel the Blue Angels to a 2-0 lead.

Moments later, the Red Devils found Madison Shines open at midfield. Shines took the ball and broke away quickly, a foul in the box and yellow card to Nicolette Almedia gave shines a penalty kick. Shines bent her lone shot around Hannah Rose for Eureka's first goal of the night.

At the 31-minute mark, Shines again used her speed to get separation. This time, Shines found her teammate Michaela Mall who flicked a touch shot into the back of net to tie the game at 2-2.

Right before the end of the first half, the Blue Angels pressured their opposition once again. This time Miryam Ramirez found Kaylie Cook open 18 yards out from the goalkeeper. A high arching shot from Cook made its way into the goal to give MMU a 3-2 lead going into the half.

The Blue Angels added one more goal in the second half before the darkness stopped the game. After a shot on goal, goalkeeper Abby Swope attempted to kick a ball to a teammate when Alexa Ahlgrim intercepted the pass and quickly knocked in a goal.

Near the 80-minute mark, the referees ended the contest due to the darkness and concern of player safety.

Hannah Rose finished the game with a pair of saves as she moves to 1-2 in the goal this season.

The Blue Angels will return to the soccer pitch next weekend with a pair of away games in Minnesota. Fri. Sept. 13 the Blue Angels will head to Martin Luther for 4:00 pm showdown.
