Women's volleyball takes a set from two nationally ranked teams in Saturday defeats

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The women's volleyball team matched up with two nationally ranked teams at the Washington-St. Louis tri-match on Saturday, dropping 3-1 decisions to No. 23 Washington-St. Louis and No. 9 Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Panthers and WashU split the first two sets with identical 25-23 scores.  The Bears took the first set, and Greenville won the second.  Washington finished the match with 25-16 and 25-17 scores in the third and fourth sets.

Greenville's attack was thwarted by the Bears, and Greenville ended with 35 kills and 32 errors in 156 attempts to finish with a hitting percentage of .019.

Sacorra Patton managed to lead the Panthers in kills with eight in the match

Emily Stahl ended with seven kills, a solo block, a block assist, and a service ace to finish with a team-high nine and half points.

Chasity Hill was active on the defensive front with 23 digs in the match, and Anna Finch and Lauren Spivey each produced three points at the net with blocks.  Finch had a solo block and four block assists while Spivey totaled six block assists.

Jordan Lempa had 15 assists and a service ace for GU, and Kaitlin Murray had 13 assists and a service ace.

In the match against Whitewater, Greenville suffered a 25-8, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16 setback.

The Panthers continued their unfortunate hitting trend from the first match and opened the first set against Whitewater with a hitting rate of -.280.  They improved steadily to .133 in the second set, .143 in the third, and .195 in the fourth. In the fourth and final set, the Panthers tallied 13 kills, five errors, and 41 attacks.

Patton finished with 12 kills as the only Greenville player to reach double figures.

Murray took the upper hand over Lempa with 16 set assists while Lempa added 14.

Hill again led the Panthers with 16 digs.

The Panthers (13-5) return to the court on Tuesday night at Blackburn for a match at 7 p.m.
