Westminster Men's Soccer Defeats Blackburn

FULTON, Mo. – The Westminster men's soccer team defeated Blackburn 4-1 on Saturday. The Blue Jays have now won 3-9 on the season and 3-2 in SLIAC play.

56 seconds into the game Collin Murray put the Blue Jays on the board when he scored an on goal off a pass from Freddy Nene. The goal was the Murray's first of his career. Westminster took 17 shots in the first half compared to the single shot registered by Blackburn. Despite this large shot advantage the half ended with the Blue Jays only leading 1-0.

Murray scored his second goal of the game in the 49th minute to give Westminster a 2-0 lead. Justin Gerdiman recorded the assist on the goal.

The Beavers scored directly on a corner kick that snuck past Westminster goalie Chase Vogt to cut the lead to 2-1.

After a foul by Blackburn Aaron Guilliams took the free kick and passed the ball to Luciano Zarinelli who fired a strike past the Beavers' goalie to give Westminster a 3-1 lead. The Blue Jays extened their lead to 4-1 in the final minute of the game when Andrew Sprengel scored his second goal of the season. Guilliams recorded his second assist of the match on Sprengel's goal.

Vogt played all 90 minutes in goal for Westminster and recorded his first win of the season. Murray and Joe Wilder each had three shots on goal for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays will play again on Wednesday afternoon at MacMurray.
