CLERMONT, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team wasn't about to wait until its final at-bat to pick up its second win of the day Saturday.
Not by a long shot.
The Cardinals — coming off a 4-3 win over Northwestern in which they scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning for the come-from-behind victory — erupted for a season-high 12 runs, including five in the fourth inning and three more in the seventh, in rolling to a 12-4 spring trip win over Webster.
After spotting the Gorlocks a 2-0 lead after the opening inning, the Cardinals' offense went to work, scoring nine unanswered runs to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Webster would cut the gap to 9-4 with its second two-run inning of the contest, but Saint Mary's iced the win with three more runs in their final at-bat in the seventh.
Mackenzie Carey (Prescott, Wis.) enjoyed a career day at the plate, driving in five of Saint Mary's 12 runs — including two-run singles in the fourth and seventh innings — while
Amber Chow (West St. Paul, Minn.) put together her second straight three-hit game, and
Amy Kulaga (Riverside, Ill.) joined Carey with two hits.
Chow earned the win in the pitcher's circle — her second of the day — allowing four runs on nine hit. The junior right-hander did not walk and batter and struck out three.
The Cardinals close out their 12-game spring trip on Sunday, squaring off against Alverno at 9 a.m. EDT and Wheaton (Mass.) at 11:15 a.m. EDT.
