Women's basketball dealt loss by Spalding

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team ended with a split in the season series against Spalding with a 64-56 loss in H.J. Long Gymnasium on Thursday night. The Panthers fell behind 19-11 after the first quarter and worked throughout the entire game to overcome the deficit.

Greenville trailed 29-21 at the half and shaved three points from Spalding's lead with a 13-10 advantage during the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers made the score 57-56 on a layup by Hannah Krukewitt with 25 seconds to play, but Spalding made their free throws when GU was forced to foul.

Regaining the ball with 21 seconds to play and down 59-56, Greenville called a 30 second timeout. A three-point attempt by Emily Reinneck came up short after the stoppage, and Spalding was able to add five free throws over the remainder of the game to seal the victory.

Four Panthers reached double-figure scoring efforts. Madelyn Stephen was the top scorer with 14 points. Krukewitt and Reinneck were next with 12 points, and Krukewitt secured her third double-double of the season with 12 rebounds. Megan Barrett posted 10 points.

Lauren Eagleson helped her teammates with five assists, and Brittany Lopez produced five steals.

The Panthers (11-9, 8-5 SLIAC) host MacMurray on Saturday at 1 p.m.
