Blue Jays Split With Greenville In Final Regular Season Games

The Westminster softball team split with Greenville College in their final regular season games of the season. The Blue Jays pulled out a 6-5 eight inning with in game one before dropping game two 5-2. They end the regular season with a 13-20 overall record and a 10-8 conference record.

Game One

Greenville led off the scoring in game one with a run scored on a passed ball in the third inning, but in the bottom, the Blue Jays tied it up. Freshman Amber Tepen singled up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball before being brought in by freshman Abby Bartley's RBI single to left field. 

In the fourth inning, Greenville added two more runs to the board to take a 3-1 lead. 

In the bottom of the fourth, two Blue Jay runners reached on errors. Sophomore Kelsi Hill brought both into scoring position with her sacrifice bunt, and Tepen brought them home with her single up the middle to tie up the game at 3-3.

In the fifth inning, sophomore Allison Biggs led off with a homerun over the left center fence. Later in the inning, sophomore Alyson Hahn doubled to center field to bring in sophomore Anne Baker and take a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Greenville's McKie hit a two-run homerun on the first pitch to knot the game back up at 5-5. The Blue Jays were held to just one hit in the bottom of the inning to send the game into extra innings. 

The Blue Jays held Greenville to three quick outs before heading into the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Alyssa Johnson was placed on second and Hahn was leading off for the Blue Jays. With a 1-2 count, she smacked a RBI double to right field to bring in Johnson and win the game 6-5.

Hahn grabbed her 11th win of the season on the mound with the 6-5 extra inning win. She pitched the complete game, allowed just four hits and struck out five. 

The Blue Jays outhit Greenville 13-4. Leading the Blue Jays on offense was Bartley with four hits on four at bats. Baker finished with three hits. 

Game Two

Greenville started game two with a three-run homerun in the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Blue Jays scored one on Baker's RBI single up the middle to score Tepen, but Greenville hit their third homerun of the day in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

In the third inning, the Blue Jays scored their second and final run of the game. Baker hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and sophomore Allison Biggs tagged up and came home. 

Greenville scored their fifth and final run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Blue Jays were able to get themselves into scoring position twice in the following four innings, but were unable to bring the runners in.

Bartley suffered the 5-2 loss from the mound. She pitched five innings and faced 26 batters. Hahn came in as relief and pitched the final two innings. 

Despite the loss, the Blue Jays outhit Greenville 10-9. Tepen, Biggs and Baker each had two hits. 

 

The Blue Jays will wait to see if they make the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament or if the 2015 season has come to a close.
