ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's basketball team fended off Baptist Bible on Tuesday to earn its first win on the year.
It was a slow start for both teams in the first, but a 3-point play from Ja'mise Bailey gave Fontbonne an 11-7 lead with 2:14 remaining.
The Lady Patriots took a 12-11 lead with 17.0 seconds left, but Bailey struck again at the buzzer hitting her jumper giving Fontbonne a 13-12 advantage
In the second quarter, the Lady Patriots led 20-15 at the 8:33 mark on Harley Maxwell's bucket. Fontbonne took a 28-26 lead three minutes later and closed out the final five minutes on an 8-3 run leading 36-29 at the break.
Fontbonne shot an improved 66.7 percent from the floor in the second quarter. Kourtney White was busy with 10 points and five boards in just seven minutes of action.
In the third, the Griffins expanded its lead out to 45-35 with 6:48 remaining on Rylee Pickett's layup. The Lady Patriots tried to make things interesting narrowing the Griffins lead down to 55-50 with 2:13 on the clock.
Fontbonne, though remained in control heading into the fourth leading 62-56. Both teams shot over 50.0 percent in the third with Bailey and White leading Fontbonne with six points in the quarter.
In the fourth, the Griffins continued to hold onto its marginal lead with Haley Buscher's layup giving them a 79-73 lead.
Baptist Bible kept hanging around and trailed 84-83 with 12.0 seconds left on Cassidy Hambelton's 3-pointer. Fontbonne on the ensuing possession went 1-of-2 from the line and the Lady Patriots went on to miss the game tying shot at the buzzer securing the two-point victory.
