Women's Basketball Scores School Record 115 Points in Home Victory Over Principia College

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Women's Basketball rebounded in a big way from its loss on Thursday at Fontbonne here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks scored a school record 115 points en route to posting a 115-36 win on Senior Day over Principia College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Grant Gymnasium.

With the win, Webster improved to 14-7 overall on the season and remains tied for first in the league standings with Fontbonne as both teams now have a 12-2 SLIAC mark after Fontbonne picked up a 65-55 home win on Saturday over Spalding. Principia fell to 0-18 overall and 0-14 in the league with the setback.

Prior to Saturday's game, the Gorloks honored its two member senior class in a pregame ceremony as the seniors this season are forward Kaylee Heggemann (Dutzow, Mo./Three Rivers Community College) and guard Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers). 

The 115 points bettered the old school record of 112 points against Stephens College on Nov. 29, 2000 and were the most points scored in an SLIAC game in league history as it topped the old mark of 111 points scored by Fontbonne against Principia on Jan. 15, 2004. In addition, the 115 points is tied for the most points scored in a Division III women's game this season as Gwynedd Mercy scored 115 points against Wesley on Jan. 29, 2020. 

Along with scoring a school record 115 points, the Gorloks also scored a school record 45 points in the first period as that bettered the old school mark of 39 points that was set two times with the most recent occurrence coming against MacMurray on Dec. 15, 2017. The Gorloks led 45-5 after the opening period. 

Webster also set new season highs in field goal attempts (84), steals (31) and tied the season high for made 3-pointers with eight and set a new season high with 42 turnovers forced, which led 61 points for the Gorloks. In fact, Webster's 61 points off turnovers were 25 more than Principia scored in the entire game.  In addition, the 36 points were the fewest allowed by the Gorloks since allowing 37 points last season against Principia.

In Saturday's game, five Gorloks scored in double figures as junior guard Kiara Rhines (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) tallied a career high 17 points off the bench, including going 4-for-4 from the 3-point line. In addition to Rhines, Morgan added 14 points and six steals, while junior guard Naomi Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) scored 13 points and added six rebounds and a career high six steals. Freshman forward Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) had 12 points and five boards and sophomore guard Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) recorded 11 points, six assists and four steals in the win. 

With her 14 points, Morgan pushed her career scoring total to 957 points and is now just 43 points shy of becoming the seventh Gorlok in school history to score 1,000 career points, while her six steals pushed her career total to 258, which is tied for the school's all-time record with Laura Stuhlman, who had 258 steals from 1998-02. 

Saturday's game was over in the first period as the Gorloks shot 66 percent from the field, 60 percent from the 3-point line and 80 percent from the free throw line as they scored 45 points and had nine players score at least two points in the period, including Rhines scoring nine points, while Cottrell and Morgan each seven points. In addition, Webster forced the Panthers into 18 turnovers that led to 31 points. 

Webster's performance in the first period came after Hannah Hathaway scored the first five points of the game for Principia to give the Panthers a 5-0 lead just 85 seconds into the contest. That lead by Principia wouldn't last long as the Gorloks would score 45 consecutive points in the period, including Cottrell giving the Gorloks its first lead of the game at 6-5 lead with 7:44 left in the period. 

In the second period, the Gorloks would outscore Principia, 17-8, to take a 62-13 lead at the half. 

All 13 of Principia's first half points were scored by Hathaway, who finished with a game high 29 points and added nine rebounds. In fact, Hathaway scored Principia's first 17 points before Maddie Wann scored with 4:06 left in the third period. Wann was the first Panther to score in game besides Hathaway. 

The Gorloks would put distance between Principia in the third period as they scored 37 points after shooting 78 percent from the field and forcing nine turnovers that led to 15 points and led by as much as 80 points following two free throws from freshman guard Tiffany Sakamoto (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) with 10 seconds left in the period. Sakamoto's two free throws gave Webster a 99-19 lead. Following Sakamoto's free throws, Hathaway would cap the scoring by drilling a trey from the top of key right before the buzzer. 

In the third period, Johnson scored eight points, while Rhines and junior forward Darieana Hunter (Norman, Okla./Norman) each scored six points in the period.  

Webster would top the century mark for the second time this season following a basket just six seconds into the period from sophomore guard Amaya Baker (McDonough, Ga./Union Grove). Baker's basket gave the Gorloks a 101-22 lead. The Gorloks would push its lead to as much as 81 points three different times in the period with the final time coming following a basket by sophomore forward Scarlett Anosier (Boynton Beach, Fla./Grandview Prep) wiht 52 seconds remaining. Anosier's basket, which was her career high eighth point of the game, gave Webster a 115-34 lead. 

For the game, Webster shot 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line and was 13-for-17 (77 percent) from the free throw line and held a 47-28 advantage on the boards, including nine players recording three or more boards. 

The Gorloks also finished with 36 assists on 47 made baskets as along with Cottrell and Johnson's six assists, Sakamato had five assists and added a career high six steals and tied a career high with nine points. 

Webster also held a 48-0 edge in points in the paint and an 18-2 edge in second chance points as the Gorloks collected 17 offensive boards. 

Principia shot 33 percent from the field and 25 percent from the 3-point line and was 3-for-8 (38 percent) from the free throw line. 

The Gorloks also had a season low 10 turnovers on the day. 

Webster will look to make it two straight wins this coming Wednesday, Feb. 12 as the Gorloks travel to Fulton, Mo., for a 5:30 p.m. game against Westminster (Mo.) College. The Gorloks picked up an 86-66 win over the Blue Jays at home on Jan. 11.
