Blue Jays Lose Heartbreaker to #17 Washington University, 1-0

The Westminster men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to nationally ranked #17 Washington University (Mo.) on Wednesday evening, 1-0. The loss snaps the Westminster Blue Jays' nine-game winning streak, putting them at 9-2 on the season.

The first 45 minutes remained scoreless and possession remained even between the two teams. The Blue Jays took nine shots in the first half. Junior Eli Sherman took the only shot on goal for the Blue Jays in the 17th minute off a header. The Washington Bears took one less shot, but seven of theirs landed on goal. 

The Bears scored the only goal of the game off a perfectly placed corner kick in the 51st minute. In the remaining 39 minutes, the Blue Jays took seven shots, but only junior David Immanuel's landed on goal. The Bears had one other shot on goal.

The Blue Jays out-shot the nationally ranked Bears 16-14, but the Bears finished with nine shots on goal compared to the Blue Jays' two.

Westminster's goalkeeper Raul Belman was credited with the loss in goal. He allowed just one goal in the 90 minutes in the net and recorded eight saves. 

The Blue Jays look to bounce back from the loss on Saturday, October 10, with a conference game at Eureka College at 1:00 p.m.
