EUREKA — A couple rallies here, some consistency there, and just like that, the Eureka baseball team has won five of its last six games.
The Red Devils swept MacMurray 5-3 and 6-3 on Wednesday, improving to 14-19 on the season and matching last season's win total.
They're now 7-12 in St. Louis Intercolleagiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Greenville still on the schedule for Monday at 1 p.m.
Game 1: Eureka 5, MacMurray 3
For the first five innings, the Red Devils failed to put a runner in scoring position. But in the sixth, trailing by two runs, Braxten Ary (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) walked, Sean Green (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) doubled and Mike Redmond (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) got on base with a fielder's choice, setting up Drew Thoele (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis) to belt a three-run homer.
MacMurray's Wyatt Logsdon homered in the bottom half to make it 3-3, but EC tallied two unearned runs in the seventh to regain the lead.
Mason Diederich (Washington, Ill./Washington) who came on with two out in the sixth, retired the side in the seventh and recorded his first win of the season.
Brock Pettit (Ashland, Ill./A-C Central) limited the Highlanders to three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings prior.
Green went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a walk. Hunter Triche (Gray, La./H.L. Bourgeois) also had two hits and a run scored for EC.
Game 2: Eureka 6, MacMurray 3
In Game 2, Gregory Cluskey (East Peoria, Ill./Metamora) improved to 6-2 by holding the Highlanders to two earned runs on nine hits in seven innings. The sophomore walked three and struck out seven.
Lefty J.D. Theile (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) pitched the two scoreless innings to get the save.
Eureka racked up six runs on 11 hits and put one on the board at a time. MacMurray scored three runs on four hits and an error in the third, but the Highlanders never threatened again.
Green went 2-for-4 with a double, while Redmond and Thoele each added two hits apiece as well. Diederich knocked his second career home run in the second inning.
Up Next: The Red Devils are scheduled to take on Knox in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m.
