Blue Jays Tie Record In 13-0 Blowout

The Westminster men's soccer team tied the game-day record for goals in a half with nine in the 13-0 blowout over MacMurray College. The Westminster Blue Jays scored nine goals in the first half, tying the 2007 record. The team is on a nine-game winning streak and holds a 9-1 record. They are now 3-0 in conference. 

Juniors Tripp Sheehan and Drew Cook each recorded a hat trick in the shutout.

Sophomore Mauricio Mateo scored the first goal of the game just 4:41 in off senior Kevin Knobbe's assist. Sheehan scored the following two goals with assists from junior Peter Plakorus and freshman Cooper Smith. Junior Eli Sherman assisted the next two goals scored by Cook and Smith. Sherman then scored the next goal off a free kick just outside the box. 

Sheehan scored his third goal of the game in the 33rd minute off the assist from Mateo, recording his hat trick in just eight minutes. Sophomore Mason VonderHaar and Cook scored the final two goals of the first half with assists from Cook and Sheehan to tie the record with nine goals in the first 45 minutes of play.

Plakorus started off the second half with an unassisted goal in the 51st minute. Cook scored his third goal to complete his hat trick in the 54th minute with the assist from junior Peter Gerber. Gerber also assisted the 12th goal of the game as junior David Immanuel put one in the net. VonderHaar scored the 13th and final goal of the game in the 73rd minute from freshman Danny Chicas' assist.

The Blue Jays took 24 shots on goal, including 17 in the first half. Eight Blue Jays scored a goal in the 90 minutes of play and 11 took a shot-on-goal.

MacMurray's goalkeeper finished the game with 11 saves while Westminster's goalkeepers Raul Belman and Tanner Moesch saw no action in the net. Belman was credited with the win after spending the first 45 minute in goal. Moesch closed out the second half in goal, and the team earned the shutout win. 

The Blue Jays look to continue their streak on Wednesday, October 7, as they host nationally ranked Washington University. The Blue Jays and the #17 ranked Bears play at 7:00 pm at Fulton High School.
