Women's soccer battles Fontbonne to 3-3 draw

GREENVILLE, Ill. — The women's soccer team matched up with Fontbonne in a 3-3 draw on Wednesday night at Francis Field.

Greenville scored all three goals in the first half as they carried a 3-2 advantage to halftime.

After Fontbonne posted the opening goal in the seventh minute, Molly McDonnell tied the score at 1-1 with her second goal of the season in the 14th minute.

Six minutes later Fontbonne recorded a goal when a Greenville defender inadvertantly deflected the ball into their own net.

Kiera Coleman earned a goal in the 37th minute when her shot went off the head of a Griffin defender and into the net.

Ellie Cummins closed Greenville's scoring with a goal in the 45th minute that was assisted by Natty Hepburn-Beaty.

In the second half, Fontbonne evened the score at 3-3, and the score held up through two 10 minute periods of overtime.

The Panthers managed to win the shot battle 16-14. The Panthers outshot Fontbonne in the first half 6-4, but Fontbonne held a 12-11 shot advantage heading into overtime. In the first overtime period, Greenville's two shots were the only shots recorded, and GU outdistanced Fontbonne with a 3-2 shot advantage in the second overtime.

McDonnell tallied six of GU's shots, placing three on frame. Breanna Thomas had a three-shot night with two on goal.

In front of the net, goalkeeper Marjory Coates collected six saves for the Panthers.

The Panthers (4-5-2, 1-0-1 SLIAC) go to MacMurray to play on Saturday at 3 p.m.
