Blue Jays Drop Two To MacMurray

The Westminster softball team dropped two conference games to MacMurray College on Wednesday evening. The first game went into an eighth inning before MacMurray pulled out a 4-2 win. In the second game, the Westminster Blue Jays lost 5-4 to bring their overall record to 10-15 and their conference record to 7-5. 

Game One

The MacMurray Highlanders put an early run on the board with a RBI double in the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until they added another run in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays had two cross home plate to tie up the game at 2-2. Freshman Amber Tepen led off with a double. Sophomore Alyssa Johnson later reached on a fielder's choice, but Tepen made it home before the Highlanders could tag her out. Johnson rounded the bases and found herself crossing home plate on a passed ball. 

The Blue Jays held the Highlanders from scoring in the seventh inning, but in the bottom of the inning they were held to three up, three down to send the game into extra innings. 

In the top of the eighth, MacMurray hit a double to score the runner placed on second. They added another run with a RBI double before sophomore pitcher Alyson Hahn struck out the batter for the third out. 

The Blue Jays were unable to move the runner on second in the bottom of the inning, ending the game with a 5-4 eight inning loss. 

The Blue Jays were outhit by the Highlanders, 9-4. Tepen grabbed two of the Blue Jays' hits.

Hahn (8-7) suffered the loss on the mound after pitching the complete game. She pitched eight innings while striking out nine.

Game Two

The Blue Jays grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the first inning with four powerful hits. A RBI single to right center by freshman Amber Tepen brought in sophomore Kelsi Hill, and a RBI single down the left field line by Johnson scored Tepen. With one runner on, sophomore Anne Baker came to the plate and blasted a home run over the left field fence.

MacMurray scored an unearned run in the third inning to put themselves on the board, and a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning tied up the game at 4-4.

In the sixth inning, MacMurray hit a triple over the right fielder. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to left field, and the third base runner tagged up and scored what came to be the winning run. 

The Blue Jays outhit the Highlanders 7-5, and Hill led the offense with two hits and a run scored. 

Bartley (1-5) suffered the loss at the mound. She pitched the complete game and struck out three.

The Blue Jays will continue their stretch of games with a doubleheader in St. Louis, Missouri on Thursday, April 16, at Fontbonne University. First pitch is a 5:00 p.m.
