Blue Jays Split At Blackburn

The Westminster softball team split at Blackburn on Saturday afternoon. They lost game one 7-5, but came back to win the second game, 8-1. The Blue Jays sit in third place in the conference with a 7-3 record, and they are 10-13 overall. 

Game One

The Blue Jays jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a RBI single by freshman Abby Bartley to score sophomore Kelsi Hill. A two RBI double in the second inning by freshman Amber Tepen brought in freshman Kim Morrison and sophomore Brittany Hodge to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.

The game was quickly tied up at 3 in the third inning with a Blackburn three-run homerun, and in the fourth inning they scored a run to take the 4-3 lead. 

The Blue Jays started the top of the fifth inning with a Bartley single and a sophomore Anne Baker double. Sophomore Alyson Hahn then stepped up to the plate and hit a single to the outfield to bring in Baker and Bartley, taking back the lead, 5-4. 

Blackburn rebutted with two runs scored in the bottom of the inning. They added one more run in the sixth inning to grab the 7-5 game one win.

Bartley suffered the loss on the mound. She pitched four innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out two. Hahn came in as relief and pitched the final two innings.

Morrison went 4-4 from the plate with a triple and one run scored. 

Game Two

The Blue Jays jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of game two. After one out, the next three batters doubled with freshman Kat Cooper's and Hodge's bringing in runs. Tepen then brought in Hodge, and sophomore Alyssa Johnson brought in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

 In the top of the third, Hahn hit a homerun over the center field fence to grab a 5-0 lead. 

Blackburn got on the board in the fifth inning with a RBI single.

In the sixth inning, the Blue Jays had two runners in scoring position with two outs. Johnson came up to the plate and hit a single, bringing in the two runners to grab the 7-1 lead.

The Blue Jays added one more run with pinch hitter Madison McKindley's sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Baker. 

Hahn grabbed the complete game win from the mound. She faced 26 batters, struck out five and allowed just one run. 

Cooper and Hodge led the offense with two hits and a RBI each. 

 

The Blue Jays have a full week ahead with four doubleheaders, starting with a home conference doubleheader versus MacMurray College on Wednesday, April 15.
