Baseball takes second of two against MacMurray

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team hoped for a sweep on Friday night over MacMurray, but they settled for a split as they dropped the first game 5-4 in seven innings before winning a 4-1 decision in game two.

Greenville had to play catchup in game one, falling behind 2-0 after the second inning.

In the bottom of the third, GU scored twice, first by Austin Lawrence on a passed ball and later with an RBI single from Andrew Torbeck.

MacMurray regained the lead 4-2 in the top of the fifth and made it 5-2 in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers got a run when Ryan Taylor scored on an error, and a dropped fly ball allowed Isaac Whitten to score.

Adam Lamb pitched 4.1 innings in the start for Greenville, allowing four earned runs.  Austin Rexroad relieved Lamb and went 2.1 innings, permitting one unearned run.

Game two featured a pair of home runs by Sam Hodges and a nine-inning complete game by Sam Alender as the Panthers salvaged the night cap.

Hodges' home runs came in the second inning to give GU a 1-0 lead and later in the fourth to make it 3-0.  Greenville's second run was courtesy of a Mark Islas RBI groundout.

MacMurray scored their only run in the top of the sixth, and the Panthers scored once in the bottom of the seventh when Taylor produced an RBI single.

Hodges finished with three hits for Greenville, and Alender permitted six hits and struck out nine.

The Panthers (20-9, 12-2 SLIAC) play MacMurray at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Greenville.
