FULTON, Mo. - Westminster baseball took one of two games in the opening doubleheader against No. 14 Webster, with Ian Cassidy allowing no earned runs and striking out 11 in the Blue Jay win.
Westminster moves to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Gorloks scored the first run of the game in the second inning after scoring on a passed ball and throwing error from Westminster.
Will Stonecipher immediately answered in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to tie the game at one run apiece. The Blue Jays added two more runs in the fourth inning to seal nthe victory, with a sacrifice fly from Ryahn Clavin to score Branden Beeler and an RBI single from Ryan Klimkiewicz to score Hayden Hirschvogel.
Ian Cassidy was dominant in the complete seven inning game, striking out 11 batters and allowing just five hits and zero earned runs for his second win this season.
In game two, Webster was hot at the plate and marked a 14-2 win over Westminster in a short seven-inning game. After the Gorloks scored 14 runs in the first seven innings, the Blue Jays were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning thanks to Tyler Bise's first career home run, a solo shot over the left field wall. Devin Masek added another run in the inning on an RBI single to score Rob Shifrin.
Alex Dickneite took the loss on the mound, going two innings and giving up six runs.
Westminster and Webster return to Saucier Field Monday for the rubber match at 4 p.m.
