CINCINNATTI, Ohio. – The Spalding University men's soccer team lost their regular season opener, 3-2 at Mount St. Joseph Tuesday night at Schuler Field falling to 0-1 on the season, while MSJ improves to 1-0.
A fast paced first half with four goals set the tone of the match MSJ scored two quick goals. The first goal came in the 6
th minute on a throw in header by midfielder Teddy Kerr. The Lions followed that up with another goal in the 22
nd minute off the foot of Colton Lipps to take the quick, 2-0, lead.
The Golden Eagles battled back late in the first half as sophomore forward
Dylin Albright tucked one in the goal off a
Jacob McMurry assist to bring SU within a goal in the 32
nd minute. Shortly after in the 43
rd minute the Golden Eagles equalized on a penalty kick by sophomore midfielder
Austin Lanham after a foul in the penalty box, giving SU momentum headed into halftime.
The second half was also played at a fast pace, but only one score came of it. MSJ was able to take advantage in the 47
th minute scoring the matches final goal, giving the Lions a 3-2 lead and eventually the win.
The Golden Eagles battled back in the late minutes of the match having chances by Albright in both the 58
th and 69
th minutes, but the Lions keeper saved both attempts. Spalding pressured the MSJ defense again in the 73
rd minute but a
Cory House header off a corner kick went over the cross bar. One minute later a cross to the backside of the box by House found a cutting McMurry, but the Lion keeper also saved his shot.
Each team put eight shots on goal. SU goalkeeper
Logan Spencer played all 90 minutes and was able to save five of them. The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround and play Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama versus Huntingdon College at 3:00 p.m. EST.
