Blue Jays Double Dip Spalding

The Westminster women's softball team double dipped Spalding University on Saturday in the conference doubleheader. The 5-0 game one shut-out and the 5-3 game two win brings the Westminster Blue Jays back in the running for the conference tournament with a 12-19 overall record and a 9-7 conference record. 

The Blue Jays started the scoring for game one in the second inning with an unearned run scored by freshman Kim Morrison off sophomore Brittany Hodge's hit. 

In the fourth inning, the Blue Jays added three more runs off four hits. Sophomore Alyson Hahn led-off with a single to the outfield, followed by a Morrison single to center field. Hodge hit a sacrifice bunt to move Morrison and pinch runner Amelia Knipfel into scoring position, and sophomore Kelsi Hill hit a two RBI single to bring in Morrison and Hill. Freshman Amber Tepen then hit a single to right field to bring in Hill before the inning ended with a double play. 

The Blue Jays scored the fifth and final run of the game in the seventh inning with a freshman Abby Bartley RBI single to the outfield to score freshman Kat Cooper.

The Blue Jays outhit Spalding 12-1 with no errors commited. Morrison was a perfect 3-3 from the plate with two runs scored.

Hahn recorded the complete game shut-out win over Spalding. She allowed just one hit and no walks in the 22 batters faced and struck out five. 

Spalding started the scoring in game two with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning. 

In the second inning, sophomore Anne Baker smashed the ball past the right fielder, and later scored on the play. In the third inning, the Blue Jays scored two more runs on four hits with RBI singles by Baker and sophomore Alyssa Johnson

In the fourth inning, Tepen hit a RBI double to center field to bring in Morrison, and in the fifth inning, the Blue Jays added another unearned run with an error by right field.

In the bottom of the sixth, Spalding added a third run off a triple, but the Blue Jays struck out the next batter to leave the runner stranded on third. 

Hahn finished out the game in the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts and a caught pop up back to the mound. 

The Blue Jays outhit Spalding 13-5 in the 5-3 win. Tepen had three hits while five players had two hits each. 

Hahn also pitched the complete second game and grabbed the win of the day from the mound. She struck out eight and allowed just one walk. 

The Blue Jays close out their regular season with a home conference doubleheader versus Greenville College on Wednesday, April 22. First pitch begins and 3:00 p.m.
