Softball Outscores Webster and the 23rd-Ranked Team

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 16th-ranked Concordia Wisconsin softball team outscored both opponents on Wednesday afternoon in Arizona.

The Falcons started the day with a 9-1 victory over Webster on Wednesday.

The Blue and White had a 4-2 lead over the 23rd-ranked team in NCAA Division III heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The game was halted due to rain. With the offer on the table, the opposing team refused to resume the game on either Thursday or Friday. Then, they then left with a 2-1 victory, after reverting back to the last completed inning.

The Falcons started the day with a five-run second inning against Webster.

Senior Gabbi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.) started the scoring with a single to center field that plated sophomore Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.).

Sophomore Adrianna Martinez (Chicago, Ill.) then singled through the left side of the infield to scored senior Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) and junior Emily Walters (Waupun, Wis.).

Senior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.) smacked the ball to left field on a double that put Gabbi Gaziano across home plate.

Sophomore Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) then snuck the ball down the left-field line to score Sydney Erdmann.

The Gorloks scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning.

Jess Pozezinski struck again in the fourth with a triple down the right-field line to score Adrianna Martinez.

In the fifth inning, Ashley Zappa roped the ball down the left-field line on a double that scored freshman Julia Moker (Hubertus, Wis.).

The mercy rule was put into place when Adrianna Martinez planted the ball to right field to score Zappa.

Senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) shined again in the circle with five strikeouts, only three hits and zero walks.

Adrianna Martinez wrecked Webster with a career-high three hits.

The birds struck first again in the second game of the day in the second inning when senior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) showed her speed and scored on a wild pitch.

The home team on the scoreboard then scored two runs to take the lead in the third inning.

In events that happened, but will not show in the box score, including a majority before the rain, CUW scored three runs to retake the lead in the sixth inning.

Jess Pozezinski started the scoring with a no-doubt home run to center field.

Julia Moker scored on what would have been the second wild pitch of the evening and sophomore Amber Behr (Oak Creek, Wis.) crossed home plate on a ball that dropped in front of an infielder for a single to Adrianna Martinez.

Senior Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) posted a solid outing against a top-25 team with two strikeouts.

Claudia Utz was on fire in game two and gunned down both runners attempting to steal a base.

CUW is now 7-1 on the year and takes on Coe and Wisconsin-La Crosse on Thursday morning.
