2014 Baseball Tournament Preview

The 2014 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament will be held this weekend May 8-10 in Highland, Ill. at Glik Park. Teams competing for the championship are Fontbonne University, Greenville College, Spalding University and Webster University.

Thursday, May 8
Game 1- #2 Spalding vs. #3 Greenville, 2 p.m.
Game 2- #1 Webster vs. #4 Fontbonne, 5 p.m.
Game 3- Loser of Game 1 vs. Loser of Game 2, 8 p.m.

Friday, May 9
Game 4- Winner of Game 1 vs. Winner of Game 2, 5 p.m.
Game 5- Winner of Game 3 vs. Loser of Game 4, 8 p.m.

Saturday, May 10
Game 6- Winner of Game 4 vs. Winner of Game 5, To Be Determined
Game 7- If Necessary

Tournament Tidbits

  • Webster has won four consecutive SLIAC Tournaments and seven overall.
  • Fontbonne is making their 11th tournament appearance and has won two SLIAC Tournaments (1998 and 2009).
  • Greenville is making their 13th tournament appearance and have made it to four championship games (2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011).
  • Spalding is making their second tournament appearance and advanced to the championship game last year before falling to Webster.
  • Webster is ranked #1 in the latest D3baseball.com national poll.
  • Webster went 26-0 in conference play this season, marking just the fourth time SLIAC history a team went undefeated in conference play. MacMurray was 16-0 in 1996 and 14-0 in 1997 while Webster went 24-0 in 2009. 
  • This tournament field marks the first time since the 2008 season that all four teams enter with a winning record.

FONTBONNE UNIVERSITY

Fontbonne is making their fifth consecutive appearance in the SLIAC Baseball Tournament. The Griffins finished the regular season with a 23-17 overall record and a 17-10 record in the SLIAC, earning the #4 seed. Fontbonne hit .301 as a team this year, third best in the SLIAC, and averaged 6.9 runs per game. Their staff E.R.A. of 4.61 was fourth best in the conference. The Griffins are led by Alex Roedner, who led the team in all three major offensive categories with a .364 batting average, four home runs and 39 runs batted in.

GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Greenville finished the regular season with a 22-18 overall record and were 19-8 in the SLIAC. They are making their first appearance in the SLIAC Tournament since 2012 and are the #3 seed in this year's tournament. The Panthers hit .286 as a team this year, seventh in the SLIAC, while their pitching staff held a 4.61 earned-run average, fifth best in the conference. The Panthers also averaged 6.9 runs per game this season. Tim Osborne leads the Panthers offense with a .378 average and a conference leading 10 home runs and 45 runs batted in.

SPALDING UNIVERSITY

Spalding is making their second tournament appearance since joining the SLIAC and were 27-13 overall and 20-7 during conference play, earning the #2 seed in the tournament. The Golden Eagles hit .312 as a team, averaging 7.1 runs per game, with a pitching staff earned-run average of 3.34, both second best in the SLIAC. The Golden Eagles have three players ranked in the top five in hitting in the SLIAC, led by Ryan Mosby's .409 average. Derek Ferch leads the team with 39 runs batted in while hitting .396 on the year.

WEBSTER UNIVERSITY

Webster is making their conference record 18th appearance in the SLIAC Tournament and will be seeking their fifth consecutive tournament title. Webster finished the regular season with a 34-5 overall record and were 26-0 in the SLIAC en route to being the tournaments #1 seed. The Gorloks hit a conference best .323 as a team, averaging 7.6 runs per game while their pitching staff finished with a 2.69 earned-run average, also tops in the SLIAC. Taylor Stoulp led the conference in hitting with a .417 batting average
