Gorloks Dominant in All-Conference Awards

Gorloks Dominant in All-Conference Awards

A dominant regular season led to a dominant awards season for the Webster University Gorloks men's basketball team. Webster took home five of six individual or team awards for the 2019-20 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball All-Conference awards. Webster went 16-2 in SLIAC play this year, their most conference wins since the 2007-08 season, while winning their second consecutive regular-season title. With those marks reached, head coach Chris Bunch was named the SLIAC Coach of the Year. This is the 6th time in his Gorlok coaching career that Bunch has taken home the league award. Bunch and the Gorloks also took home the SLIAC Team Sportsmanship award which recognizes the team whose players, fans, and coaches best exemplified the league's ideals of sportsmanship.

Webster guard Josh Johnson was named the SLIAC Player of the Year. The senior was a consistent scorer for the Gorloks all season long averaging 18.1 points per game during conference play. He reached double figures in scoring in 14 of his 16 conference games he played in with a high of 35 points and four other games with at least 20 points. Johnson shot 47-percent from three-point range, knocking down 42 three's. He ranked in the top ten in the league in three-point field goals and three-point percentage while leading the league with a 90-percent free-throw percentage. He is the first Gorlok to take home the league's top individual award since 2012 when Stefan Whittingham won the award.

Johnson's fellow senior teammate Enrique Tankins goes down as the league's first-ever SLIAC Men's Defensive Player of the Year. Tankins, a guard, has long been one of the league's most well-rounded players. In addition to averaging 14.6 points per game overall this season and ranking in the top ten in assists, he made just as big of an impact defensively. Tankins averaged 10.1 rebounds per game during conference play while recording 33 steals and 32 blocked shots. He finished 1st in the SLIAC in blocked shots, 2nd in rebounding, and 6th in steals.

The final Gorlok to be honored is guard Wynne Brown Jr. The freshman averaged 13.2 points per game against conference opponents with 49 assists and 24 steals. All 14 of his double-digit scoring games this season came in conference play including four games with more than 20 points.

The final individual award is another new award to the league, the 6th Man of the Year. Chanz Aldridge, from Blackburn College, is this year's recipient. Aldridge, a sophomore guard, started just five conference games but managed to average 14.8 points per game while recording 38 assists. He led the league with a 49-percent three-point percentage during conference play and shot 54-percent from the field. Aldridge's points per 40 average of 24.6 was 14th best in the SLIAC.
