Multiple Griffins Selected To Capital One Academic All-District Teams

The 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball and Softball teams were announced today. Teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognizing student-athletes for both their academic and athletic performances. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight districts that recognize the NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III.

Fontbonne, representing NCAA Div. III District Five (AL, Ar, FL, GA, MO, MS, NC, PR, SC, TN, VA) has one baseball player and three softball players earning the high-caliber award. Junior Zach Carel garnishes a 3.96 GPA and is double-majoring in Biology and Psychology. This year, Carel recorded 21 RBI's, 30 hits, 19 runs, nine doubles, one triple and one home run.

Each Fontbonne softball player represented also earned SLIAC All-Conference honors. The Griffins have been ranked in the top in GPA in NCAA Div. III each of the last three years and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive year. Outfielder Shannon Fitzpatrick, a senior English major, has a 3.97 GPA. Fitzpatrick has walked 23 times this season, currently has a .385 batting average and owns Fontbonne's records for career triples (15), career walks (90) and single-season walks (31). She has a .385 batting average, 13 stolen bases, 12 walks,

First baseman and SLIAC Player of the Year, Cassi Glixman earned the All-District honors repping a 3.92 GPA in Dietetics. The two-time All-Region senior boasts a .449 season batting average, .819 slugging percentage, 54 RBI's, 18 doubles and 13 walks. She is a member of Fontbonne's Circle of Omnicron Delta Kappa, has the school's season hits record (60) in 2014, is nearing the school's season RBI mark, Jewish Sports Review All-American 1st Team and is Fontbonne's career leader in runs (161) & RBIs (165).

Catcher Emily Smith, with a 3.93 GPA and Social Work major, has recorded a .345 batting average, 31 RBI's, 14 doubles, two triples and one home run this season. The junior recorded zero passed balls and has caught 12 runners stealing.

Capital One Academic All-District award winners will be considered for the Capital One Academic All-America teams, voted on by the Academic All-America committee and CoSIDA Board of Directors.
