Greenville and Westminster Advance In Softball Winners Bracket

Greenville University and Westminster College were winners in the opening night of the 2018 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament. The opening day was a wet and windy one that saw Westminster defeat Webster University 11-9 in game one of the tournament while Greenville topped Fontbonne 3-0 in the nightcap.

Westminster and Webster started the tournament off with a bang, combining for 20 runs; the fourth most in a tournament game in conference history. Westminster plated a run in five of their six innings at the plate including seven in the first two frames. Webster scored at least one run in the each of the games final four innings and had the tying run on the bases in the 7th but was only able to push across one run, leaving runners stranded at second and third. 

  • Westminster pounded out 14 hits with Aubrie Vaughn leading the way with four hits.
  • Katie Price picked up the win in the circle for the Blue Jays.
  • Katlyn Garza led the Gorloks with three hits, adding two RBI. 
  • Kaitlyn Johnson worked 4 2/3 innings in relief for Webster.

The second game of the night was the opposite of the opener with a pitchers duel that saw all of the scoring take place in one inning. Greenville crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the 4th inning, putting their first four hitters on base. Fontbonne had their chances including a pair of singles to start the 3rd but were never able to come up with the big hit. 

  • Beth Mersinger finished 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and run scored for Greenville.
  • Maegan Stone worked 7 innings of shutout ball, striking out one and allowing six hits.
  • Alleigh Kruse and Emily McNiff led Fontbonne with two hits each.
  • Maddy Strickland threw 6 innings for the Griffins, striking out three.

What's Next
The tournament resumes on Friday with three more games at ABC Park in St. Ann, Mo. Greenville will face Westminster at 1 p.m. in the winner's bracket while Fontbonne and Webster will go head to head at 3 p.m. The day's third game will pit the winner of Game 4 against the Loser of Game 3 at 5 p.m.
