Panthers Defeated By #10 WashU

The women’s basketball team traveled to Washington – St. Louis for their first  appearance in the NCAA national tournament and lost 87-48 to end their historic season. 

Greenville fell behind early, encountering a quick seven point deficit just 3:25 into the contest.

Greenville cut the deficit to 11-8 with a three-point basket by Jamie Schollenbruch with 5:14 remaining in the first quarter and kept possession of the ball when a defensive foul on WashU followed by a jump ball allowed them to hang on to the ball.

The Lady Panthers were unable to convert, and the three point deficit was as close as they got.

After one quarter, WashU led Greenville 27-14.

WashU opened the second quarter on an 11-4 run to extend their lead to 17 and carried a 45-27 advantage into the second half.

Greenville cut the lead to 13 in the third quarter, but every time the Panthers went on a run, WashU quickly answered.  The Bears took a 61-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

WashU closed the game with a 24-14 fourth quarter to win.

Senior Missy Deal led Greenville with a team-high 10 points.  Coley Baker posted eight points and six rebounds.

Kayla Hyde had six points and seven rebounds.

Greenville outshot WashU 47.8 percent to 47.1 percent in the first half but 16 turnovers hurt the Lady Panthers.   Greenville ended the game with 27 turnovers.

The Lady Panthers capped their season with a record of 20-8.  Washington – St. Louis will host Wisconsin – Whitewater at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
