Webster Wins Third Consecutive SLIAC Championship

The Webster University women's soccer team added a seventh St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship with a 3-1 win over Principia College (IL) on November 7, at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks are headed to their 11th NCAA III Tournament appearance in the 16 years of the program's existence, by virtue of capturing the SLIAC Championship.  Kristin Montgomery netted two goals for Webster and was named the Tournament MVP.

Webster swept through the SLIAC regular season at 9-0, and continued its dominance over SLIAC opponents this season in the tournament, defeating #4 Westminster College, 2-1, to advance to the title bout, and then beating #3 seed Principia, 3-1.  The Gorloks beat the Panthers, 4-1, in 2013 to win the SLIAC Championship.  This was Webster and Principia's sixth meeting in the title game, with the Gorloks now holding a 4-2 edge head to head with the Panthers.

The Gorloks outshot the Panthers 9-0 in the first half, with four shots on goal.  They struck first on a Montgomery (SR, St. Louis, MO/Duchesne HS) goal at 16:59.  Montgomery took a pass from Lauren Pratt (JR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) and headed it in for her 10th goal of the season.

At 51:11 in the second half, Webster extended the lead to 2-0 on a goal by Ashley Mess (JR, St. Louis, MO/Northwest HS).  Mess headed a Lindsey Adshade (SR, Chicago, IL/DeKalb HS) corner kick straight up in the air and the ball descended just in front of the Principia crossbar.  As the Principia goalie reached to catch the ball, lost her grip and had to turn to catch the ball...but as she did the ball crossed the goal line for a score.

Principia made it interesting when a ball chipped into the Webster box got loose of the Gorlok defense and a Panther forward fired it past Jessica Davis (SR, Belleville, IL/Belleville West HS) to make it 2-1 at the 62:29 mark.  Principia still had 27 minutes to tie the score.

But the Webster offense did not rest and kept the pressure on. Montgomery scored her second goal of the night off a cross from Adshade, to make it 3-1, with less than seven minutes to play to secure the game and the championship.  For Montgomery, it was her 11th, giving her the team lead on the season, and the 42nd goal of her career.  She moved into sixth place on Webster's all-time goal scoring list, passing Sarah Talbot (1999-2002), who had 40.

Adshade, who led the SLIAC with 11 assists, picked up her 12th and 13th.  That ties her for eighth place on Webster's single season all-time high list for assists.

Webster wound up outshooting Principia, 24-3, for the game, with 13 shots on goal, and had eight corners to none for the Panthers.

Davis, who was one of six Gorloks named to the SLIAC All-Conference First Team (see related story), picked up the win in goal and is 9-2-2 on the year.  She is now 44-13-3 in her career at Webster.

In addition to Montgomery being named MVP, Adshade, Pratt, and Whitney Scott (SR, Independence, KY/Holy Cross HS) were named to the 2014 SLIAC All-Tournament Team.

Webster is 14-4-3 overall and now awaits word from the NCAA on where they will land in the Tournament and who its opponent will be.  The Tournament selection show will air live on ncaa.com at 12 noon on Monday, November 10.

Following the game the All-Tournament team was announced and included Tournament MVP Kristin Montgomery from Webster, Lindsay Adshade from Webster, Lauren Pratt from Webster, Whitney Scott from Webster, Kara Johnson from Principia, Gabby Martin from Principia, Nadine Marczi from Principia, Maddie Redohl from Fontbonne, Kayla Thorpe from Fontbonne, Katie Koonce from Westminster, and Ashley Schimmel from Westminster.
