Pohtos Breaks Blue Jays Career Game-Winning Goals Mark
Westminster women's soccer senior Tayisah Pohtos broke the Westminster game-winning goals record during Saturday's 10-0 shutout victory over Iowa Wesleyan, and sophomore Morgan Henry recorded a hat trick in the win. The Westminster Blue Jays are now 2-0 in conference play and 4-4-1 on the season.
The Blue Jays scored four goals in the first nine minutes of the game. Pohtos scored the first goal of the game just 2:40 in with the assist from freshman Courtney Whitlock. This goal was the game-winning goal, breaking the Westminster record. Henry scored less than a minute later off another assist from Whitlock.
Pohtos scored her second goal of the game in the sixth minute with an assist from senior Ashley Schimmel, and Henry then scored her second goal of the game in the ninth minute with senior Eileen Koppy's assist.
Freshman Gracie Koonce scored two consecutive goals in the 13th minute and the 19th minute. Henry completed her hat trick in the 22nd minute with the pass from sophomore Payton Beeler.
The Blue Jays did not score again until the 43rd minute when sophomore Tabitha Tiefenthaler scored off senior Erin DeVasto's pass. Just 23 seconds later, freshman Heidi Gundy scored a goal to send the game into halftime with a 9-0 lead.
The Blue Jays scored just one goal in the second half. Beeler found the back of the net in the 87th minute to win 10-0.
The Blue Jays took 22 shots on goal. Henry connected on all three of her shots on goal while Pohtos connected on two of her three shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey (4-4-1) was credited with the win in goal. She was in the net for 17:19. Freshman goalkeeper Ali Perry finished out the game in goal, recording 73 minutes.
The Blue Jays host MacMurray College on Tuesday, October 6, at Columbia College. Game time is at 7:00 pm.
