Lewis Leads List of All-Conference Players
Webster University's Marissa Lewis leads the list of the 2014 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference team. The Newcomer of the Year goes to Principia's AC McMullen while the Coach of the Year is shared by Greenville's Pam Craig and Principia's Shannon Carney. The Team Sportsmanship Award goes to Greenville College.
Lewis, a junior from Owasso, Okla., was named the 2014 SLIAC Player of the Year after going undefeated in regular season conference play with a 6-0 record at #1 singles. She handed two-time Player of the Year winner Carlie Sanderude, from Principia, her only regular season loss in conference play this season. Lewis finished the season with a 10-3 overall record and joins Erin Rubinelli (2004) as the only Webster players to take home top individual honors.
The Newcomer of the Year is Principia's AC McMullen. McMullen, a freshman from Lewisville, Texas, was 11-9 overall this season including going 4-0 in conference play. She saw most of her action at #4 singles where she was 9-3 overall this season. She added four more conference wins in doubles action and finished the year with 20 combined wins.
The Coach of the Year honors are split between Greenville's Pam Craig and Principia's Shannon Carney. Craig guided Greenville to a 4-1 conference record this season and seven wins overall. Carney led Principia to an undefeated conference mark and a second consecutive SLIAC Tournament title. This marks the third time in Craig's coaching career she has earned SLIAC Coach of the Year honors while Carney has now won her second.
In addition Greenville College was awarded the conference's Team Sportsmanship Award which recognizes the team whose players, coaches and fans best exhibit the principles of good sportsmanship. The SLIAC also recognizes one individual from each team, selected by his coach and teammates, who throughout the season best displays the ideals of sportsmanship. The 2014 All-Sportsmanship Team includes Kate Alderman (Blackburn), Celeste Herrmann (Fontbonne), Anna Brannon (Greenville), Lena Carlson (Principia), Erin Roop (Webster), and Amy Osborn (Westminster).
