Spalding Remains Hot; Defeats Webster In Game of the Week

The Spalding University volleyball squad remains red hot, defeating Webster University in the SLIAC Game of the Week to push their winning streak to four matches. After defeating the Gorloks just two weeks, the Golden Eagles swept the season series by winning 3-1 on Thursday night. This marks the first time since the 2010 season that Spalding has swept Webster in the season series.

Spalding took the match on Thursday by the scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, and 25-21. Webster grabbed the opening set after hitting .516 as a team and putting down 17 kills. The set was tied at 17-17 when the Gorloks pulled away with three straight kills and closing the set on an 8-3 run.

Spalding responded in the second set by scoring the first five points. Spalding held off the Gorloks, not allowing the score to grow any closer than three points. It was another hot start for Spalding in the third set, tallying the first four points. This time however Spalding was unable to fend off the Gorloks with Webster forcing a 23-23 tie. However Golden Eagle Jessica Diehl stepped up to put an end the set by recording back to back kills for the win.

The two teams remained tight early on in the fourth set, with Spalding holding a slight 12-11 lead. But after back to back attack errors by Webster Spalding grabbed the momentum and opened up a 17-11 lead; thanks in large part to a pair of blocks. Despite a late push by the Gorloks Spalding was able to cruise to a 25-21 win and wrap up the match victory.

Spalding hit .252 as a team in the match with 54 kills and 18 errors, while recording 15 total blocks. Diehl led the way with 18 kills, hitting .500, and finishing with six total blocks. Alyssa Cosgrove added 13 kills and Victoria Heitzman finished with 11 kills. Katelyn Cosgrove added 42 assists. Spalding improves to 17-8 overall and 11-4 in the SLIAC.

Webster was led by Macee Owen's 10 kills while Katie O'Toole recorded 18 digs. Webster is now 15-8 overall and 11-4 in the SLIAC.
