Fontbonne Looking for Repeat in SAAC Challenge

Fontbonne University is looking to repeat as the SLIAC SAAC Challenge award winner as they maintain their lead in the conference-wide race. The Griffins added nearly 1500 points during the winter sports season, pushing its total this year to 6525 points. The Griffins baseball team remains the most active group on campus, participating in the Pedal for the Cause and Tree Lot setup. The cross country and track and field teams spent time working with Care STL and on campus with the physical plant. Softball was the most active during the winter season, volunteering at four different events including the 'Feed My Starving Children' project.

Webster University was the most active school during winter sports, nearly doubling its point total from the fall. The Gorloks are up to 3001.10 points this season after totaling 1801.10 points during the winter. Gorlok student-athletes were active in 37 different events from December through March with 11 different athletic programs being involved. The most points came from when the men's basketball team assisted St. Louis ARC, an organization that works with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Webster also played host to Special Olympics at halftime of a basketball game and visited Givens Elementary School several times for various activities.

Spalding University has totaled 1955 points so far with its biggest point-getter coming from the women's soccer team volunteering at the Clark County Youth Soccer Clinic. The Golden Eagles have also spent time working with hearing-impaired youth and hosting a Special Olympic bowling tournament.

At the end of each school year, the conference recognizes the winner of the SLIAC/SAAC Challenge with an award at its SLIAC Banquet. The award is presented to the institution that went above and beyond in giving back to its community. The challenge tracks activities such as community service projects, collections (food and clothing), and donations. The full criteria are listed below:

10 pts/ service hour per student-athlete
5 pts/item donation (clothes, shoes, toys, games, equipment)
1 pt/ $1.00
1 pt/ per 2 cans

The SLIAC SAAC is a committee of student-athletes that serves as a communication link between the conference member student-athletes and the athletics administration of the SLIAC member institutions. SAAC members are expected to represent the viewpoints of student-athletes on their respective campuses and to serve as a vital communication link between the Conference and its student-athletes.

SAAC members also look to enhance the image of student-athletes both on campus and in the community through engaging in campus and community service projects and serving as positive role models for their peers and younger athletes. The committee also serves as a voice for issues that involve rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes.
