Principia Student-Athletes Pick Up Post-Grad Scholar Award

A pair of Principia College student-athletes have been selected as this year's post-graduate scholarship award winners. Spencer Christensen and Kelsie Huss will each receive $1,000 from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to go towards their post-graduate studies.

Christensen, a men's cross-country runner, is majoring in Biology and Sustainability while maintaining a 3.94 grade-point average. Christensen has served as the Principia College Sustainability Club President and was a member of the Principia College Solar Car Team as well as a PC Land Stewardship worker and Dorm Ecology Officer. In addition, Christensen served as an admissions ambassador, fire brigade member, and study mentor. After graduation from Principia, Christensen plans on pursuing his Master's in a field related to Ecology.

Huss, a women's tennis player, is a double major at Principia in Biology and Sustainability. The senior carries a 3.981 grade-point average and has been involved in numerous campus and off-campus activities. Huss served on the house board at Principia as both the eco head and new student head as well as SAAC, a writer/editor for the school newspaper, and an officer for the Sustainability Club. Off-campus she taught tennis to local middle school and high school students, helped design a garden for a local high school, and volunteered at a cacao farm in Ecuador and at a local nursing home. Huss will spend the next year building field and research experiences before pursuing her Ph.D. with plans on studying avian foraging ecology.

To be eligible for the SLIAC Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients must be a graduating senior, have earned two varsity letters in a championship sport sponsored by the conference, have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, and nominated by their institution. Nominees are chosen by conference member Faculty Athletic Representatives.
