LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team wrapped up the Derby City Classic against the host team, Spalding, on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 5). The Golden Eagles are receiving votes in the top-25 poll and defeated the Hornets 5-2.

Kalamazoo scored the game's first run to open the game in the top half of the first inning. Cooper Mills was hit by a pitch, Lukas Bolton walked, and Harrison Poeszat was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mills scored when Spalding turned a double play for two outs.

All five Golden Eagle runs were scored in the second inning. A single and two walks loaded the bases with no outs. Two singles, a fielder's choice, and a double brought the runs in to score.

The game's final run was scored in the eighth when the Hornets cut into the deficit. The bases eventually ended up loaded after Mills singled, then Bolton and Cam Kelly walked. Finally, Robert Newland picked up Kalamazoo's lone RBI with another walk.

Bolton was on base three times on the day with a hit and two walks. Mills scored both runs for the Hornets, and five batters had a hit on the day.

Thomas Sylvester (1-1) lasted four innings, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six. Braden Mussat had two strikeouts in his inning pitched, and Jacob Davis threw the final three frames with four strikeouts.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to have its home opener against Elmhurst on Saturday (Mar. 11) as the doubleheader begins at 11 a.m.
