Baseball collects season sweep of Westminster

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team completed the season sweep of Westminster with a pair of wins on Saturday at Robert E. Smith Field. Greenville received a walk-off solo home run from Snyder Pennington in an 8-7 10-inning win in game one and took a 9-7 decision in the second game.

Game 1

The Panthers built a 5-2 lead over the first three innings before allowing the Blue Jays to take a short-lived 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers tied the game, and the score remained that way until Westminster took another brief one-run lead in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Panthers tied the game and the contest went to extra innings before the Panthers received Pennington's game-winning blast.

Drew Frey, Pennington, Brexton Beard, and Nathan Eye all finished with two hits for the Panthers. Pennington ended with three RBI.

Luke Fleener started the game on the mound and worked through six innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on eight hits with eight strikeouts.

Ian Wilson allowed a run in two innings of work and bridged the game to Dylan Boehm who completed the contest with two scoreless innings of relief.

Game 2

The Blue Jays took a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings before GU tied the game in the bottom of the third at 3-all.

The Panthers established a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth before the Blue Jays regained the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.

During Greenville's time at bat in the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers tied the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers posted four runs that carried them to the victory despite two Blue Jay runs in the top of the eighth.

Both Frey and Tanner Gerdes posted three hit efforts for the Panthers. Gerdes added three runs scored, and Frey posted two runs and three RBI.

Landon Mokris continued his offensive production with a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI.

Lucas Teel drew the starting pitching nod and threw five innings, only allowing three runs on two hits. He walked five and hit a batter while striking out three.

Jaxen Gibson entered the game with a lead but gave it up with four runs allowed over three innings. Gibson received the win.

Gerdes picked up his first save of the season with a perfect ninth inning of relief.

The Panthers (10-10, 4-0 SLIAC) will take their perfect SLIAC record into a home game against Blackburn at 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon at Robert E. Smith Field.
