Women's basketball picks up win no. 18 and no. 2 SLIAC tournament seed

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The women's basketball team secured the second seed in the SLIAC tournament with a 78-71 win over Fontbonne on Saturday.

The teams were tied at 16-all after the first quarter, and the Panthers pulled ahead 40-33 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Griffins outscored Greenville 29-10 and took a 62-50 advantage into the fourth quarter.

With the goal of hanging on to second place in the conference standings, Greenville took control with a 28-9 final frame and picked up the seven point win.

Greenville's leading scorer in the game was Carolina Hoffman off the bench with 17 points.

Savana Powell-Goodman tallied 13 points, and Ally Cantrill had 11 points.

Mia deJesus and Emily Reinneck each led the way with five rebounds, and Cantrill was on top with four assists and three steals.

The Panthers (18-7, 11-3 SLIAC) reached the 18 win threshold for the eighth time in head coach Roy Mulholland's 24 year tenure with GU, and the team will play on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the SLIAC tournament at Webster.
