Softball Drops Both Spring Trip Contests Against Beavers and Cadets

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Elms College Softball team fell to the Blackburn College Beavers, 10-2. Followed by a game under the lights where they were edged by conference team the Norwich University Cadets, 13-12.

How it Happened

Elms started the day off with a game against the Blackburn College Beavers falling to a final of 10-2 after 6 innings.

The Beavers started the game off with back to back two run innings, jumping to a lead of 4-0 at the top of the 3rd.

The two team stayed scoreless for two innings, the third through the fourth, till Blackburn was able to capitalize off of a third strike passed ball sending home their fifth run of the game.

The Beavers double their score in the final inning, recording five more runs (10-0). The Blazers were able to chalk up two runs at their final at bat. Senior Nicole Defeo (Watertown, CT) speeds home after an error by the Beavers shortstop. The final run was scored by Josie Cammarata (Wolcott, CT) who was sent home after Katie Cosmos (Wolcott,CT) doubles to the right fielder.

Tuesday's game against Norwich University was a heartbreaker for the Blazers, as they lost the lead late in a 13-12 defeat. The game was tied at 12 with Norwich batting in the bottom of the seventh when an error scored the winning run for the Cadets.

Elms collected 12 hits and Norwich had 14 in the high-scoring affair.

The Blazers got off to quick start, platting 3 runs in the top of the first.

Elms opened things up, scored five runs in the fourth inning.The Blazers big bats were led by Sarah Fortini (Florida, MA), Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, NY), Nicole Defeo (Watertown, CT), and Kelsey Bennett (Chicopee, MA), who all drove in runs.

Norwich scored four runs in the sixth inning.  Taylor Farnworth and Rachel Kempf each had RBIs in the big inning. Allison Northup was the winning pitcher for the Cadets. Maren Mcginn threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Jayden Dow (Springfield, MA) took the loss for Elms. The pitcher surrendered ten runs on 12 hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out one.

Kennedy White started the game for Norwich University. The righthander allowed nine hits and six runs over three innings, striking out one

The Blazers tallied 12 hits on the day.  Kyla Cook (Taunton, MA), Schwark, and Cammarata all collected multiple hits for Elms. Cook led the way with three hits in five at bats.
