Men's tennis captures wins in three of four matches in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The men's tennis team performed well during their spring break trip to South Carolina, winning three of four dual matches and 29 of the 36 individual matches they played during the week.

Monday, March 13

Vs. Lake Forest

The Panthers opened spring break play with a 5-4 loss to Lake Forest in their first match on Monday.

Greenville dropped two of the three doubles matches with the No. 3 combination of Jordi Matuhen and Thibaut Tignee providing an 8-7 win.

In singles, Greenville's winners were No. 1 Andres Sanchez, No. 2 Rafael Rodriguez, and No. 5 Luke Motsinger.

Sanchez earned a 0-6, 7-5, 10-8 come-from-behind win in his match, and Rodriguez took the 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Motsinger had to go to a tiebreaker before winning 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Greenville's No. 3 Matuhen and No. 4 Clark Kent lost in a third set tiebreaker.

Vs. Bethel (Minn.)

The Panthers swept Bethel 9-0 in GU's second match on Monday. The Panthers only had one match go to a tiebreaker, and it was in No. 1 singles.

Greenville's three doubles combinations dominated their matches. The No. 1 team of Sanchez and Rodriguez and No. 3 team of Matuhen and Tignee both won 8-1. The No. 2 duo of Kent and Motsinger captured an 8-4 win.

In singles, No. 1 Sanchez took his match 3-6, 6-3, 10-7, and the remaining five players won in straight sets.

No. 2 Rodriguez was a 6-1, 6-2 winner, and No. 3 Matuhen took a 6-3, 6-3 win.

No. 4 Kent and No. 5 Motsinger were 6-1, 6-0 victors.

No. 6 Santiago Jaimes earned a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Tuesday, March 14

Vs. Carroll (Wis.)

The Panthers played Tuesday and took an 8-1 win over Carroll (WI).

Greenville swept all three doubles matches.

The No. 1 and No. 2 combinations of Sanchez/Rodriguez and Kent/Motsinger won 8-6.

The No. 3 team of Tignee and Matuhen took their match 8-2.

In singles, the only win for Carroll came due to a retirement from No. 1 Sanchez.

No. 2 Rodriguez topped his opponent 7-6, 6-1, and No. 3 Matuhen went three sets in a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 win.

No. 4 Kent won 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets, and No. 5 Motsinger dominated his opponent to a 6-1, 6-1 tune.

No. 6 Jaimes earned a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 tiebreak win.

Thursday, March 16

Vs. Concordia Wisconsin

The Panthers defeated a Concordia Wisconsin team with low roster numbers in an 8-1 decision on Thursday.

GU's No. 1 doubles team of Sanchez and Rodriguez won 8-6, and the No. 2 team of Kent and Motsinger also won 8-6.

The Falcons had to forfeit No. 3 doubles to Tignee and Matuhen.

In singles, Sanchez was out of the lineup, so Rodriguez assumed the No. 1 position. He captured a 6-4, 6-3 win.

No. 2 Matuhen defeated his opponent 7-6, 6-2, and No. 3 Kent won a 6-4, 6-1 match.

No. 5 Tignee came away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory, and No. 6 Jaimes won by default.

The Panthers (11-5) head to the University of Illinois for a match against Anderson (IN) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21.
