Baseball loses two 9-5 decisions at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The baseball team dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader by identical 9-5 scores to bring conclusion to their weekend series against Spalding.

Game 1

The Panthers established a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of Saturday's first game and led 4-1 after their turn at bat in the second inning.

The Golden Eagles cut GU's lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second and took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third.  GU tied it in the top of the fourth.

Spalding scored twice in the fourth and once more in the sixth and eighth innings to gain their winning margin of victory.

Snyder Pennington led the Panthers offensively with a 3-for-4 outing and two RBI.

Landon Mokris drove in two runs with a 2-for-5 hitting performance, and Drew Frey also went 2-for-5.

Frey and George Schneider each scored two runs.

Braden Maltbie started on the mound and allowed seven runs, six earned, on four hits and five walks in 3.1 innings.

Ian Wilson struck out six in 2.2 innings and held Spalding to just one run.

Jacob Hammer closed the game on the mound over two innings and only permitted an unearned run.

Game 2

Greenville had to play catchup in game two of Saturday's twinbill when the Golden Eagles scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second.

GU tied the game in the top of the third and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth.

The Golden Eagles took control of the game with seven runs scored over the fourth through sixth innings, and the Panthers made the score 8-5 in the top of the seventh before Spalding tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Panthers received two hits from Frey, S. Pennington, Trent Morgenstern, and Rhett Pennington in the second game.

Mokris drove in two runs, and Frey scored a pair of runs.

Lucas Teel opened the game on the mound for GU and pitched four innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks.

Dylan Boehm gave up three runs with three walks in the fifth inning, and Jaxen Gibson allowed one run on two hits and a walk.

Cade Buehnerkemper threw 2.2 innings and only allowed one run on three hits, and Terry Millikan allowed an unearned run on two hits in the eighth inning.

Next Up

The Panthers (11-13, 5-3 SLIAC) go to Blackburn on Tuesday for a game at 3 p.m.
