Fontbonne Baseball Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Engineers

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—The Fontbonne University baseball team saw its four-game win streak get snapped on Sunday falling to RPI, 10-9. Fontbonne goes to 6-4 on the season, while RPI improves to 1-1-1.

The Engineers struck first in the bottom of the second taking a 2-0 lead, but in the fourth the Griffins answered.

Trey Kueper got things started with a single to center and advanced to second after Bryce McKinnon reached base on an error. Thomas Purschke stepped in and doubled to left plating the duo.

Later in the inning, Purschke scored on a passed ball giving Fontbonne a 3-2 lead.

The Engineers tied the game in the bottom half, but Paul Wilson gave Fontbonne a 4-3 lead in the fifth with an RBI single to center scoring Colby Shivers, who reached base on a two out walk.

The Engineers got the run right back in the next half inning, however, the Griffins once again took a 5-4 lead in the sixth.

RPI, though scored six runs on three hits in the bottom sixth taking a 10-5 lead. In the seventh, the Griffins had the bases loaded and nobody out.

Jack Wood grounded out to short allowing Matt Helm to score. Then, Purschke cleared the bases with a triple to left making it a 10-8 game. After a pitching change, Grant Staffen kept the line moving with a single to left scoring Purschke and putting the Griffins down one.

That'd be the final run of the game with the Engineers fending off the Griffins for the 10-9 win.
