Blackburn Defeated on Senior Day

On another cold and windy day in Carlinville, Blackburn Softball lost their senior day doubleheader to Fontbonne by the scores of 5-4 and 5-0.

In game one, the Griffins took advantage of an early bases loaded situation and scored a run in the bottom of the first. They scored another run in the top of the second because of a wild pitch from Blackburn, and a follow-up double made the score 3-0.

In the top of the fifth, Fontbonne scored another run on an RBI groundout, which made the score 4-0.

The Beavers managed to get themselves back into the game in the bottom of the fifth. After a leadoff infield single from Natalie Keith and follow-up single from Chelsea Terranova, Chelsea Ashlock blasted a three-run homer over the left field wall, making the score 4-3.

In the top of the sixth, Fontbonne made the score 5-3 off a triple late in the inning.

Holly Heuerman gave the Beavers life in the bottom of the sixth, when she led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field wall.

Unfortunately, the Beavers couldn't mount the comeback in the seventh inning, and lost game one. Hailey Kutz took the win on the mound for Fontbonne, while Jesse Tomson suffered the loss on the mound for Blackburn.

Game two started with Fontbonne taking an early 1-0 lead, scoring a run in the top of the first off an RBI single. In the top of the second, Fontbonne scored another run, taking a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers had a difficult time generating offense through the first three innings, as Fontbonne's pitcher, Kami Matthews, kept them off the board.

Fontbonne manufactured a run in the top of the fourth from a perfectly placed squeeze bunt, which gave them a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. They scored another pair of runs in the top of the sixth, securing a 5-0 lead.

The Beavers were unable to make a comeback against Fontbonne and were defeated in game two as well. Kami Matthews recorded the win for Fontbonne, while Taylor Girth suffered the loss for Blackburn on the mound.

The Beavers have a pair of doubleheaders left, with their next being away against Eureka on Tuesday. Following that, the Beavers will play at home on Thursday, May 4th, for their last doubleheader of the 2023 season.
