Softball splits Saturday doubleheader with Rose-Hulman

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The softball team split their home doubleheader against Rose-Hulman on Saturday with a 7-5 loss in game one, followed by a 9-1 five inning win in game two.

Greenville fell behind 3-0 in the top of the second and 4-0 after the top of the third before scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings.

In the top of the sixth, the Engineers had three runs benefited by a pair of errors. Those runs would prove to be costly after the Panthers posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh.

The Panthers had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but their runner on first base was removed due to an illegal substitution with a pinch runner. Rose-Hulman closed out the game immediately following the substitution penalty with a ground out by the Panthers.

Mia Boyd finished game one 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Madi Case and Sarah Salas each had two hits, and Jamey Johnson scored two runs.

Starting pitcher Melissa Bernal was tagged with the loss. She pitched two innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

Andrea Roberts worked five innings in relief and surrendered four runs, one earned, on six hits.

In game two, Alison Klaus only permitted two hits and one unearned run with two walks and six strikeouts in a five inning win.

The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and made it 5-1 in the second inning after the Engineers added an unearned run.

The Panthers finished the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Boyd went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.

Emma Funk was also 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Johnson crossed the plate with two runs.

The Panthers (3-1) will be off during Spring Break week, but they are scheduled to host Franklin next Saturday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at Panther Field.
