Men's soccer shuts out Principia to move to SLIAC finals

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer team moved to the championship match of the SLIAC tournament with a 1-0 win over Principia on Thursday night at Francis Field.

The teams went into the second half deadlocked at 0-0, but GU received the winning goal from Napoleon Urquidi in the 61st minute when he deflected a ball into the net.

Greenville accumulated an 18-5 shot advantage, receiving four shots from Urquidi. Of the five Principia shots, only one was on goal and required a save by Hiram Cruz.

Andres Garcia recorded three shots for Greenville, and the team posted their fifth consecutive shutout.

The Panthers (10-3-5) will play Webster at 7 p.m. on Saturday night for the championship. It will mark a return to the championship match for the Greenville team that has advanced one step further in the conference tournament over the last three seasons.  Last fall, GU advanced to the semifinals after making a quarterfinal appearance in the shortened spring 2021 season.

During the 2022 regular season Greenville and Webster tied both matches, a 1-1 draw in Greenville on Sept. 14 and a 2-2 deadlock at Webster on Oct. 12.
