Softball season concludes Friday with 5-4 loss to Fontbonne in eight innings

PEORIA, Ill. - The softball team completed their season with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Fontbonne in eight innings at the SLIAC tournament. The Panthers worked back from a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the top of the sixth and took the lead with a run in the top of the eighth before the Griffins scored twice for the win.

Fontbonne took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Panthers tied it up in the top of the third with back-to-back doubles from Jamey Johnson and Madi Case.

The Griffins battled right back with two runs in the bottom of the third for the 3-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Panthers tied the game. With one out, Mia Boyd was hit by a pitch, and Sarah Salas singled.

Desirae Yost loaded the bases with a single, and Fontbonne recorded the second out of the inning with a fly ball that kept pinch runner Emily VonHatten at third base.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Emily Longcor singled to centerfield to plate two runs, but she was thrown out trying to advance to second base.

In the top of the eighth, Salas and Yost posted doubles to give Greenville their first lead of the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Griffins plated two runs for the win.

Salas finished the game with a 3-for-4 performance and plate, and Yost had two hits.

Alison Klaus recorded the loss in the circle when she allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits and one walk whiling fanning two batters.

The Panthers wrapped up head coach Ivan Estevez's first season with an overall record of 24-17 and a fourth place mark of 12-6 in the SLIAC.
